A Russian Aerospace Forces Tu-95MS strategic bomber, destroyed at air bases in the Murmansk region on June 1 during the operation codenamed “Spider Web,” was reportedly preparing for a combat mission. This conclusion can be drawn from the analysis of photos released by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

The photos show at least one Tu-95MS parked on the airport taxiway, with a Kh-101 ground-attack cruise missile mounted on its underwing hardpoints, which may indicate that some of these aircraft are beginning to prepare for a combat mission.

Immediately after the SBU released videos of attacks on Russian Tu-95MS aircraft, some experts noted the fact that the enemy FPV drones hit precisely the underwing pylons where missiles were hung, where there were also fuel tanks.

So far, judging from the images and videos, it can be confirmed that the Russian Aerospace Forces lost a number of bombers and 1 early warning aircraft in this attack; however, the Russian Ministry of Defense did not announce the number of aircraft lost in the attack.
5-7216.jpg
However, the Security Service of Ukraine claimed that a total of 41 Russian aircraft were destroyed, including medium-sized transport aircraft such as the An-12. The Ukrainian General Staff's announcement that Russia lost 41 aircraft is incorrect.

The reason is that the damage must be based on photos, videos and satellite images and thus have a basis. This basis makes sense, but a number of other factors need to be taken into account, such as satellite images will not appear immediately, the Russian military will clean up the attack site and control information, etc. Therefore, it is not reliable to assess Russian losses based on visual evidence alone.
7-2126.jpg
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) monitored the attack throughout. The FPV drones that were released were connected to the Russian telecommunications network and the video signals were transmitted in real time. The SBU must have known how many Russian aircraft were hit.

The Russian strategic bombers destroyed or damaged during Operation Spider Web were Tu-95MS and Tu-160 aircraft, Yuri Ignat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces, said in an interview with the Ukrainian newspaper Pravda.
9-4001.jpg
These aircraft have launched a total of 2,437 subsonic missiles into Ukraine since the outbreak of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine in 2022, including Kh-101, Kh-555 and Kh-55 with conventional warheads. Ukrainian air defenses have intercepted 1,916 missiles, but “there are still about 500 missiles that have not been intercepted”;
10-2635.jpg
In addition, the destroyed or damaged Tu-22M3 Backfire medium-range supersonic strategic bomber launched more than 400 Kh-22 and Kh-32 supersonic cruise missiles, all of which successfully penetrated Ukraine's air defense shield.
11-8550.jpg
Because these old hypersonic cruise missiles have low accuracy in ground attacks (as announced by Ukraine), they are often used by Russia to attack targets such as weapons factories and the 1-ton warhead has caused serious losses to Ukraine.
12-7586.jpg
Operation Spider Web destroyed and damaged a number of Russian bombers, which had long been out of production or were being built very slowly. This operation had great tactical and strategic significance, contributing to preventing these bombers from continuing to launch missiles into Ukraine.
13-7782.jpg
It is worth noting that, according to the Ukrainian leaders, Operation Spider Web has been prepared for a year and a half. And the date of the attack was not chosen randomly. The second round of negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Istanbul was scheduled for June 2, and on June 1, Operation Spider Web was launched.

It is certain that the Ukrainian FPV drones, which attacked the strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces, based at bases in the Murmansk and Irkutsk regions, were transported to the site of sabotage by Ukrainian special forces in cargo trucks. (photo source Ukrinform, Topcor, Kyiv Post).
