Proud to be the Capital of the Resistance

A special position in the national defense strategy.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Nhue, former Deputy Director of the Institute of History, in charge of the Institute of History: In the process of nation-building and national defense from the dawn of history, Tuyen Quang has always been considered a protective screen, a "barrier" shielding the delta region. Tuyen Quang witnessed the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people in the struggle against the feudal domination of the North. This land, with its rugged terrain and towering mountains, became one of the important bases where uprisings broke out fiercely, contributing to the preservation of the national borders and cultural identity. During the feudal dynasties, Tuyen Quang was a crucial "border region," where the emperors applied the "lenient" policy to control local chieftains.

Tourists visit the Kim Quan safe zone historical site, where President Ho Chi Minh, the Central Party Office, and other Party and Government agencies resided and worked.

Entering the 20th century, Tuyen Quang continued to play an important role as a base in the pre-insurrection revolutionary movement. In 1937, the first Party organization was established here. By the end of 1941, many units of the National Salvation Army had formed and developed strongly, especially the 3rd National Salvation Army Platoon - the province's first armed force - which affirmed Tuyen Quang's special strategic position in the struggle for independence.

In particular, Tuyen Quang became one of the cradles of the Vietnamese revolutionary movement. Under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh , Tuyen Quang quickly became one of the important centers for revolutionary leadership, a place where prominent revolutionary leaders of the country gathered, and also the site of major events that contributed to the successful General Uprising throughout the country. Tan Trao truly served as the capital of the Liberation Zone and the central base for revolutionary leadership nationwide during the August Revolution of 1945.

Capital of the Resistance

Following the success of the August Revolution, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was established on September 2, 1945. On December 19, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh issued a call for nationwide resistance. The strategic Tuyen Quang area, as well as the Viet Bac base, continued to fulfill its historical mission – serving as the ATK (Anti-French Resistance Zone) and the Capital of the Resistance.

It is no coincidence that Tuyen Quang was chosen by history as the capital of the Resistance. From its favorable geographical location and solid revolutionary base to the unwavering loyalty of its people to the Party, it possessed all the necessary elements to become the "cradle" of the sacred resistance. The revolutionary spirit of the people, blended with the rugged and mobile terrain of its mountains and rivers, made Tuyen Quang one of the most reliable and secure zones for the revolution nationwide.

Tuyen Quang was the location of the Second National Congress of the Party (1951) - the first Congress held in the country, under the harsh conditions of the resistance war. At this Congress, our Party openly adopted the name Vietnam Labor Party, making many strategic decisions that paved the way for victory in the resistance war against French colonialism.

Throughout the arduous years of the resistance war, Tuyen Quang truly became the "Capital of the Resistance." Here, at historical sites such as Tan Trao, Kim Binh, and Ho Chi Minh's cave hut, important decisions of the Party and State were made, leading the entire nation in the protracted resistance war and ultimately achieving victory. The image of President Ho Chi Minh, simply working in a small hut, discussing national affairs with his comrades, has become a symbol of unity, determination, and unwavering faith in the victory of the resistance war.

According to Colonel Ha Dinh Khiem, Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command: Existing and developing amidst enemy encirclement, and constantly being attacked and destroyed by the enemy in every way possible, the Central Committee's safe zone in Tuyen Quang was always meticulously and strictly protected. Through regular education, propaganda, and reminders, the people of Tuyen Quang considered preventing espionage and maintaining secrecy to protect the Central Committee's organs as their responsibility and duty. The protection of the Central Committee's headquarters in Tuyen Quang was inseparable from the task of organizing combat to repel enemy military attacks, expanding and consolidating the Viet Bac base area. A prime example is the Viet Bac - Autumn-Winter 1947 campaign, which completely thwarted the enemy's "quick strike, quick victory" strategy, firmly protecting the Viet Bac base area - the center of the resistance, preserving the main forces, and ensuring the safety of the Party and Government's central organs within the safe zone. Tuyen Quang was not only the workplace of leading agencies but also a solid rear base, providing manpower and resources for the front lines. The people of Tuyen Quang did not shy away from difficulties and hardships, contributing all resources to serve the resistance war. The civilian labor brigades, the rice fields, and the cornfields laden with grain contributed to nourishing and supporting our army in fighting and winning.

The Capital of Resistance is not just a historical designation, but also a spiritual brand, a belief passed down through generations. This pride exists not only in historical records and ancient symbols, but is also present in every step of transformation of Tuyen Quang today.

Preserving and promoting the values of the Capital of Resistance is preserving the Vietnamese spirit, fostering the will for independence and self-reliance for the present and the future. Tuyen Quang will forever be a vivid testament to the truth: when the people rise up, no force can stop the flow of revolution.

Proud of its glorious past and its immense contributions to the cause of national liberation, the Party Committee, government, and people of Tuyen Quang province today are striving to build a prosperous, beautiful, and civilized province, continuing to uphold revolutionary traditions and living up to the proud title of "Capital of Resistance." Tuyen Quang will forever remain a significant historical site in the nation-building and national defense history of the Vietnamese people.
