TNG emphasized that security units in the Sidi Bouzid province of central Tunisia have dismantled a criminal network involved in the illegal trafficking of African migrants. These migrants were to be transported to the Sfax province in southeastern Tunisia and then illegally enter Italy.
The crackdown comes as the Sfax coast becomes a transit point for illegal migrants seeking to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa.
Located just 80 km off the coast of Tunisia, the island of Lampedusa is often the first stop for illegal migrants before they reach Italy.
This is one of the reasons for the surge in migration in Europe. A few weeks ago, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) reported that the number of irregular border crossings at the European Union's (EU) external borders had reached 331,600 in the first 10 months of 2023, the highest level since 2015.
