By 5 p.m. on July 28, candidates must complete their university and college application registration on the Ministry of Education and Training’s General Admission System. There is not much time left, but there are still candidates who are hesitant about choosing a major.
Choose your favorite major or the major with a higher chance of being accepted?
Standing at the threshold of university, candidates cannot avoid feeling pressured and worried when having to make important decisions for the future. The current concern of many candidates is to choose a major that they really love and that has a higher chance of being accepted. Making the wrong decision will have a long-term impact on their future studies and career.
Facing pressure from himself and his family's expectations, Tran Hoang Tien, a 12th grader at Phan Van Tri High School ( Vinh Long ), was very hesitant when registering his wishes after knowing his exam scores. "I felt a lot of pressure and hesitation. If I chose the major I love, I was afraid I wouldn't have enough points to pass, and if I chose the major I didn't like, I was afraid I would have difficulty adapting," Tien confided. Tien's wish was to study logistics and supply chain management, but with his current score, if Tien chose psychology, it would be easier to pass.
Also at this high school, Vo Thi Ngoc Huyen shared about the pressures she faced when registering her wishes. “The biggest pressure comes from my family and myself. My family wants me to study public administration for safety, with an acceptable score, while I want to pursue my passion for teaching but am afraid of disappointing my parents,” Huyen confided. Currently, the female student said she is hesitant to choose between history pedagogy and public administration.
Give yourself a chance
It is extremely important for candidates to choose the right and suitable application for themselves, because this will be a major turning point in their future career development. Because of this, Hoang Tien listened to advice from his family, as well as watched many consulting videos from universities to make the most suitable choices for himself before registering. Although he was hesitant, Tien still wanted to give himself the opportunity to choose the major he loved. "Although I am afraid that I will not have enough points to pass the major I want, I will still put my favorite majors first, because my first criterion is my love for the major," Tien said.
Despite the pressure of family expectations, Ngoc Huyen still wanted to take a risk to choose the major she loved. Huyen shared that she had loved history and had a passion for teaching since she was young. Even though she knew that the benchmark for this major was high and the chance of passing was low, she would still register because she wanted to give herself the opportunity to pursue her dream. Before making this decision, Huyen consulted many reliable sources, as well as listened to advice from previous teachers, which gave the female student more courage to pursue her passion.

Don't forget to be practical.
The 2-week registration period allows candidates more time to think and consider carefully before making important decisions for the future. Choosing a major and school is not only based on interests but also needs to take into account personal abilities and future career opportunities, to avoid unnecessary regrets after finalizing your wishes.
Master Nguyen Thi Huynh Giao, lecturer at the Faculty of Creative Communication at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, said: “When registering their wishes, students should prioritize their passion, but besides that, they also need to consider practicality. Carefully research the training program and career opportunities. Put your favorite major in the top wish list and also have some ‘safe’ backup wishes.”
In addition, Ms. Huynh Giao also shared more about the factors that help students make the best choice of major for themselves. According to her, the most important factor when choosing a major is suitability, which is the intersection between passion, ability and career prospects.
According to this expert, candidates need to determine what they like, what they are good at, and whether the major has good job opportunities. Choosing a major after considering all three of these factors will help candidates make wise choices, avoiding following trends or family pressure when choosing a major in their university or college admission application.
