According to Engadget , in 2018, Twitter signed a $1 billion contract with Google to host some of its services on Google Cloud servers. But now, the company is reportedly rushing to move many services out of Google's infrastructure before the contract expires. However, these efforts are "slow," leading to the risk of some tools like Smyte – a platform the company acquired in 2018 to enhance its moderation capabilities – becoming inoperable.
Twitter continues to reject a previously offered contract.
If Twitter is unable to migrate its systems to its own servers before the end of June, this could render the company's anti-spam and child sexual abuse (CSAM) content protection features inoperable.
This comes as the trusted group was questioned by billionaire Elon Musk about why the company's automated system wasn't catching errors. This concerned a report of a Twitter user named Blue impersonating him to carry out a cryptocurrency scam. The group subsequently told Musk that the system had been unstable for a week, crashing "at least once a day."
If Twitter is indeed planning to make things difficult for Google, this wouldn't be the first time the company has failed to fulfill its contract. Late last year, California Property Trust – the owner of the building housing Twitter's headquarters – sued the company for failing to pay rent.
