According to Reuters, the US dollar is heading for its sharpest weekly decline since June in the markets. The dollar came under significant pressure in the currency market as US assets were heavily sold off early in the week amid escalating geopolitical tensions, reviving the "sell-on-US" narrative that emerged after large-scale tariff measures last April.
The euro rose 0.5% to $1.18, poised for a weekly gain of over 1%, after the French government survived two no-confidence votes. Meanwhile, the British pound traded around $1.36; UK retail sales figures showed a surprise increase in December but had little impact on the exchange rate.
The yen fluctuated sharply during Friday's trading session, with two sudden surges fueling speculation that Japanese authorities had conducted a "rate check," a move often seen as a signal before market intervention.
The Japanese yen (JPY) briefly rose to 155.855 yen/USD, after earlier weakening to 159.2 yen/USD, near an 18-month low, as Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda held a press conference following his decision to keep interest rates unchanged.
Traders believe that authorities have not directly intervened but are only conducting checks on exchange rates at banks to signal their readiness to act. The yen has been under constant pressure since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took office in October, amid growing fiscal concerns and volatility in the Japanese bond market.
