The US dollar strengthened in Tuesday's trading session as investors focused on how the Trump administration plans to implement new tariffs, after the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected tariffs imposed under an emergency law. The U.S. began collecting a temporary 10% global import tariff on Tuesday, but a White House official said the Trump administration is working to raise it to 15%.
“The reaction to this whole tariff story so far has been relatively subdued,” said Eric Theoret, a foreign exchange strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto. “Perhaps the more unpredictable thing will be the reaction from major trading partners.”
On Monday, Mr. Trump warned countries against withdrawing from recently reached trade agreements with the U.S., arguing that doing so would expose them to significantly higher tariffs under other trade laws.
The Japanese yen fell on Tuesday after news that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had expressed his reservations about further interest rate hikes to Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda, raising doubts about the next rate increase.
If this information is accurate, it suggests the potential for disagreements in monetary policy direction, which could complicate the Bank of Japan's path as coordination with the newly consolidated government becomes more difficult.
“This is definitely a concern that I think has weighed on the market,” said Eric Theoret. “We’re getting information that there may have been, if not pressure, then at least an exchange of dissenting opinions.”
A Reuters survey released last week showed that a majority of economists forecast the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will raise its key interest rate to 1% by the end of June, with some suggesting the move could happen as early as April due to growing concerns about inflationary pressures and a weak yen. Traders are currently pricing in a 50% chance of a rate hike in April and a 65% chance of a rate hike in June.
The Japanese yen fell 0.69% against the US dollar, to 155.74 yen/USD. The euro declined 0.03%, to 1.178 USD.
The Chinese yuan rose to its strongest level against the US dollar since April 2023, as investors bet that new US tariff plans would boost the country's exports. The currency recently gained 0.16%, to 6.878 yuan/USD.
Traders are also closely monitoring escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Tuesday that a nuclear deal with the U.S. “is within reach, but only if diplomacy is prioritized.”
