Japan U17 had a successful opening match in Group B of the 2026 AFC U17 Championship, defeating Qatar U17 3-1. Despite falling behind in the first half, the young Japanese team demonstrated their strength as title contenders with a convincing comeback after the break.

The match took place at King Abdullah Sports City Pitch C Future, Jeddah. Qatar U17 started confidently and surprisingly took the lead in the 25th minute. Ayokunle Tokode capitalized on the opportunity to put the West Asian representatives ahead, causing Japan considerable difficulties for the remainder of the first half.
Trailing by a goal, the Japanese U17 team was forced to push forward. However, their passing combinations in the first 45 minutes lacked the sharpness to break through Qatar's defense. It wasn't until the second half that the pressure from the four-time champions finally paid off.
In the 51st minute, Kakeru Saito scored the equalizer, making it 1-1 and marking a turning point for the Japanese U17 team. After this goal, the East Asian representatives played more fluidly, controlled the game better, and continuously put pressure on their opponents. In the 70th minute, Maki Kitahara scored to give Japan a 2-1 lead.

But the scoring didn't stop there. Kitahara continued his impressive form in the 76th minute, completing his brace and sealing a 3-1 victory for Japan U17. This result gives Japan three crucial points, while Qatar faces significant pressure ahead of their next match against Indonesia.
