Recently, UNITED24 (a platform run by the Government of Ukraine) published a video recording the scene of drone operators of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) of the Alpha Task Force operating on the front line. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

The video provides interesting details about how and by what means they attacked two Russian helicopters in flight last year, which caused a stir at the time. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

Specifically, on August 7, 2024, an unidentified drone crashed into a Russian Mi-28 attack helicopter. Just a few days later, a similar incident occurred, this time involving a Mi-8 transport helicopter. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

It turned out that both helicopters were not hit by an air defense system or a quadcopter FPV drone as initially predicted, but by a special Ukrainian-made FPV UAV called Darts. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

Darts operates like a regular FPV drone but has a fixed-wing design. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

This allows it to carry a larger warhead, fly further and reach higher speeds than a conventional FPV drone with four propellers. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

This Darts drone can carry a 4–5 kg warhead, has a range of 40–50 km and reaches a speed of about 160 km/h. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

For comparison, Russia's Molniya suicide drone can carry a heavier payload, up to 10 kg, but has a shorter range, about 30 km. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

In the video, the operators claim that the Russian helicopter was “shot down” and not just “damaged.” However, no visual confirmation has been provided, so for now we can only confirm that the Russian helicopter was hit or damaged. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.

It should be noted that the Myanmar resistance forces actually beat Ukraine to this historic milestone — in May this year, they became the first to shoot down a helicopter with a quadcopter FPV drone. Photo: @Security Service of Ukraine.
