Barcelona received a penalty from UEFA. |
According to Mundo Deportivo , the penalty was handed down a few weeks after the Catalan club was eliminated from European competition. This is also seen as a disappointing end to Barcelona's season, despite them winning La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.
In the Champions League quarter-finals, Barca lost to Atletico Madrid with an aggregate score of 2-3 over two legs. Hansi Flick's team won 2-1 in the second leg at the Metropolitano but it wasn't enough to overturn the deficit.
In the UEFA penalty, Barcelona was fined €20,000 for starting the second half later than scheduled. The European Football Federation always takes strict action against delays in match times as they directly affect broadcast schedules and tournament organization.
The remaining amount, worth 2,500 euros, stemmed from Barcelona fans setting off flares in the stands during the match against Atletico Madrid. Although the amount wasn't large, it was still considered a completely avoidable disciplinary violation.
The sanctions further exacerbate the off-field problems Barcelona faces in continental competitions. The Catalan club clearly needs to improve its matchday control, both in terms of organization and spectator management, if it wants to avoid becoming a target of UEFA scrutiny in the future.
Following a turbulent season in Europe, Barcelona is expected to make a series of adjustments with the goal of returning to the Champions League title race next season.
