The latest large-scale offensive across Ukraine by Russian forces comes after days of warnings that Moscow was planning a major offensive.
Russia has targeted Ukraine's power supplies and infrastructure, while Kyiv has intensified attacks on Russian oil facilities. The mutual attacks in the war, which has lasted more than four years, have resulted in casualties, but both sides deny targeting civilians.
The governor of the Dnipro region, Oleksandr Hanzha, said on the Telegram messaging app that five people were killed and 25 injured in a Russian missile and drone attack on the southeastern city of Dnipro. All the injured are receiving hospital treatment. He also posted images of destroyed residential buildings, burnt-out vehicles, and a damaged children's playground.

At least four people have been killed and 51 injured, including children, across the capital Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed. A Russian missile attack struck a 24-story apartment building, causing it to collapse and potentially trapping many people under the rubble, Klitschko said.
Mayor Klitschko added that a nine-story apartment building was among other structures that caught fire, suspected to be due to missile debris.
"In the Obolon district, a car caught fire after being hit by falling missile debris," Klitschko said. "In addition, fires also occurred in two outdoor locations, including one near a kindergarten."
Thousands of residents flocked to Kyiv's subway system seeking shelter early on the morning of June 2nd. Some carried belongings and mattresses, as the sound of anti-aircraft fire repelling Russian airstrikes echoed throughout the area.

Air strike warnings sounded across much of Ukraine early on June 2nd, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated the previous day's warning of a possible major offensive.
"Intelligence warnings about Russian attacks remain in effect. A large-scale attack is possible. They have prepared for such an attack," Zelensky said in his nightly online address. "Our defense forces are ready 24/7 at the maximum possible level with the resources available."
Last week, Russia warned that its forces intended to carry out "systematic attacks" on targets linked to the Ukrainian military in Kyiv, as well as decision-making centers, and urged foreigners to leave. Russia said this action was in retaliation for Ukraine's May drone strike on a school dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region, which killed 21 people. However, Ukraine denied carrying out the attack on a civilian area.
