The Ukrainian military said its forces had achieved "partial success" in some directions in the counter-offensive and were holding up well in the positions they had taken.
"Our soldiers have achieved partial success. None of Ukraine's defensive positions have been lost," spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Kovalov said on June 16.
Mr Kovalov said Ukraine had successfully counterattacked in the villages of Novodanylivka and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia, and the villages of Levadne-Staromaiorske and Stupochky in Donetsk. Near the city of Ugledar in Donetsk region, the Ukrainian army also took control of several more areas.
"During the counterattack, the soldiers remained on the defensive in the controlled positions," Kovalov added.

Ukrainian Brigadier General Oleksii Hromov said on June 15 that his country's forces had recaptured seven villages in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia with a total area of more than 100 square kilometers of territory in a counteroffensive campaign since last week.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said on June 16 that the Ukrainian army continued to suffer heavy losses on the Donetsk and Donetsk South fronts. Russia said that within 24 hours, it had killed about 500 Ukrainian soldiers and destroyed five tanks, many armored vehicles and other military equipment.
After launching a series of attacks on Russian defense lines, Ukraine lost many soldiers and weapons, including Leopard 2 main battle tanks and M2 Bradley armored vehicles. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on June 14 called on member countries to ensure Ukraine has enough weapons to pursue the counterattack.
Mr. Stoltenberg said that Ukraine’s counterattack was “making progress,” but it was too early to know whether this was a turning point in the conflict. US officials, meanwhile, said that Ukraine still had a lot of fighting power left to unleash.
