A new study shows a link between consuming more than 400mg of caffeine per day and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, even in healthy individuals.

Nency Kagathara is the lead author of the study from Zydus Medical School and Hospital (India). Kagathara explains: “Regular caffeine consumption can disrupt the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased blood pressure and heart rate.” The analysis results were presented in early August at the American College of Cardiology conference in Delhi, India.
Kagathara's team measured the blood pressure and heart rate of 92 healthy adults after they completed a 3-minute walking test. The volunteers, aged 18 to 45, had normal blood pressure at the start of the experiment.
Nearly 20% of participants consumed more than 400mg of caffeine per day, equivalent to about 4 cups of coffee, 10 cans of soda, or 2 bottles of energy drink. Over time, this group experienced a gradual increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
Author Kagathara states that urban women in managerial and business positions consume the highest daily amounts of caffeine.
Those who consume more than 600mg of caffeine per day experience a significant increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Expert Kagathara advises: "Raising awareness of the risks of coffee is crucial for improving cardiovascular health for everyone."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that consuming less than 400mg of caffeine per day “typically does not cause harmful or negative effects.” However, the agency acknowledges that some people are more sensitive to caffeine and that caffeine metabolism varies from person to person.
High blood pressure is associated with a higher risk of coronary artery disease, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and dementia.
Experts recommend regular exercise and a nutritious diet to lower blood pressure. If weight loss, dietary changes, and exercise are ineffective, medication may be necessary.
Dr. AS Benjamin Hirsh, Head of Preventive Cardiology at North Shore University Hospital (USA), assessed the study's results as interesting: "People will realize that over time, drinking too much coffee can be dangerous for the heart, increasing blood pressure and causing arrhythmias. Dependence on caffeine can increase productivity and keep you alert, but health should always come first."
Caffeine, a stimulant found in coffee, can boost the production of the stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine, increasing heart rate and blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. But caffeine has also been shown to improve mood and reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, among other benefits.
