In the study, scientists at the University of Oxford (UK) analyzed data from over 500,000 people. The data was obtained from Cancer Research UK. The scientific team wanted to examine the impact of 97 dietary factors on the risk of bowel cancer, according to the health website Healthline (US).

Drinking milk may help reduce the risk of bowel cancer.

After 17 years of health monitoring, more than 12,000 people were diagnosed with bowel cancer. Among them, alcohol was the highest risk factor for bowel cancer. Conversely, calcium was the highest risk factor for reducing the disease.

Drink milk every day to ensure you get enough calcium and maintain good health.

The study concluded that supplementing with approximately 300 mg of calcium daily may help reduce the risk of bowel cancer by 17%. Typically, an adult needs to consume between 800 and 1,000 mg of calcium per day. To reduce the risk of bowel cancer, an additional 300 mg of calcium is needed. This amount of calcium is equivalent to a large glass of fresh milk.

The amount of calcium varies depending on the type of milk. Whole cow's milk contains approximately 1,200 mg of calcium per liter, skim milk contains 1,300 mg, and pasteurized milk contains 1,100 to 1,200 mg. Plant-based milks such as almond, soy, and oat milk contain around 200-500 mg. Additionally, leafy green vegetables and yogurt are also rich in calcium.

Calcium not only helps strengthen bones and teeth but also protects the body from cancer. Studies show that calcium binds with bile acids and free fatty acids to create a compound that helps prevent damage to the intestinal lining. Over time, this damage can lead to cell mutations and the development of cancer.

To avoid the risk of bowel cancer, experts recommend that people eat plenty of fiber, especially fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. In addition, they should limit processed meats and red meat, avoid alcohol and tobacco, and exercise regularly while maintaining a healthy weight, according to Healthline.
