First, there was the incident where tennis player Daniil Medvedev (Russia) became aggressive towards a cameraman, criticized the umpire, and broke his racket after his 2-3 defeat to Benjamin Bonzi (France) in the first round. Medvedev had to pay a fine of $42,500 for this lack of self-control.
Next came the controversy between Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko and Taylor Townsend (USA) in the second round of the women's singles. Specifically, after losing the match, Ostapenko refused to shake hands and insulted her opponent, calling her "lacking class" and " uneducated ." This led to intense criticism of Ostapenko (world No. 27) on social media, and she had to publicly apologize.
Two days ago, Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece, world No. 26) threatened to hit Daniel Altmaier (Germany) after his 1-2 defeat (6-7, 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7) in the second round of the men's singles. The reason was that Tsitsipas was unhappy with his opponent's serving strategy. Tsitsipas told Altmaier: "Next time, don't wonder why I hit you."
Most recently, there was a controversy between Jaume Munar (Spain) and Zizou Bergs (Belgium) in the third round. In this match, despite winning 3-0 (6-1, 6-4, 6-4), Jaume Munar complained afterward that Zizou Bergs often "shouted meaninglessly" whenever he hit the ball.
In response, Zizou Bergs dismissed Munar's comments as "nonsense." There have also been numerous instances of players displaying anger during matches, from singles to doubles, in both men's and women's categories.
Why does anger erupt so intensely?
According to experts, the environment plays a significant role, especially the notoriously noisy crowds in New York. Whistles and shouts erupted like a torrent when Medvedev lost his temper. This drove the audience into a frenzy, yelling and booing every time Bonzi served.
Tennis player Jessica Pegula commented: "I guess New York City is known for its dramatic events. The crowds here are incredibly passionate."
They make people agitated and easily lead to emotional outbursts. In addition, everyone is stressed because this is the final Grand Slam of the season. Therefore, people can become tense and lose their temper during the competition."
