VAR helps "cool down" but the storm is not over yet
The 2024/25 V-League season opens a new chapter in refereeing with the application of VAR being deployed more widely and systematically.
As a result, the number of disputes over refereeing decisions has decreased significantly compared to previous seasons. Sensitive situations such as recognizing goals or penalties have become less likely to cause prolonged disputes, because most decisions have been verified by images and clear procedures.
Refereeing in V-League 2024/25 has been better...
The presence of a dedicated VAR assistant team helps reduce pressure on referees on the field, creating conditions for them to make more accurate decisions. Overall, refereeing last season was considered okay.
However, “okay” does not mean “perfect”. The 2024/25 season still recorded a few incidents related to the coach’s statements, the team’s heavy reactions and public criticism aimed at the refereeing team.
And of course, the reaction also comes from incorrect decisions, or causes the teams to feel "mildly frustrated" by the referees, but in general, compared to before, the refereeing work in the V-League has improved.
Challenges for referees in the new campaign
Entering the 2025/26 season, the pressure on the refereeing team promises to increase sharply. The bottom line is that the competition has been raised quite a lot compared to before.
Looking at the spending of clubs in the transfer market, it can be seen that V-League 2025/26 is expected to be very tense, promising fierce competition, so the task of balancing the balance of the Black Shirt Kings is also under a lot of pressure.
But with the tense nature of next season, I'm afraid it won't be easy for the kings of the field.
Furthermore, the presence of high-quality foreign players and overseas Vietnamese is expected to bring to the V-League more speed, physical strength and sophisticated playing style, leading to more complicated dispute situations, forcing referees to handle them more quickly and accurately.
It can be seen that the 2025/26 season is a big challenge for the refereeing work in Vietnam. Hopefully, with careful preparation, the Kings of the field will complete their tasks well to make the V-League more worth watching as expected by fans and experts.
