Reading culture in businesses

Sao Phuong Nam Co., Ltd. dedicates the first 10 minutes of the morning to reading for its employees.

Eager to learn and explore new knowledge, Dr. Tran Quoc Tuan, head of the Phuong Nam Dental Clinic at Sao Phuong Nam Co., Ltd., is a book lover and passionate reader. Along with his studies and work experience, a significant portion of his accumulated knowledge comes from the books he reads daily as a healthy habit and hobby. Understanding the importance of self-learning, Dr. Tuan wants to spread this love of reading to his staff and employees, enabling them to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of the service industry while also acquiring new skills and knowledge for personal and business development. To encourage his colleagues to read and love books, Dr. Tuan dedicates 20 minutes at the beginning of each morning to reviewing the previous day's work and planning for the day's tasks. He then assigns someone to read a chapter from a book aloud to the entire team, after which the employees draw lessons from the reading.

Medical staff at Hung Vuong General Hospital, Vietnam Medical Development Company Limited, take advantage of their breaks to read books and enhance their knowledge.

At the clinic's reception area, there's a bookshelf with hundreds of books of all kinds, including philosophy, education , and children's books. The most popular books include: "The Path to Success," "Kindness," "Discipline Makes a Good Person," "Doing the Right Thing," "Never a Failure," "All Is a Challenge," and children's books such as "Growing Up with Great People," "Sowing Seeds with Great People," etc. Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan shared: "Not only do we inspire our staff to read, but we also want to spread this reading habit to our customers when they choose our services. With smartphones and internet-connected devices gradually eroding people's connections, I don't want my customers to be glued to their phones while waiting. I want them to choose suitable books to read. Many of my regular customers are young children who immediately run to the bookshelf to pick up a book they were reading last time. Many customers borrow books from me to read and then return them or exchange them for other books..."

The library of Vietnam Medical Development Co., Ltd. currently stores over 1,000 books, mainly on specialized medical and pharmaceutical fields, general medicine, literature and art, professional knowledge, life skills, success stories, life and career stories, and comics. The number of books here is increasing every day. Mr. Pham Van Hoc, Chairman of the Board of Directors and General Director of Vietnam Medical Development Co., Ltd., said: “In addition to the books and magazines we collect, purchase, and store, a significant number of books are donated by agencies, companies, and organizations. These are very valuable assets currently preserved in the hospital library. We also implement electronic archiving of completed research projects and scientific topics as reference materials for our medical staff.”

In fact, in every business, the workload and pressure occupy a large portion of time and impact the psychology of employees. Therefore, in addition to building bookshelves, forming a reading habit among employees is very important. Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich, an employee of Sao Phuong Nam Co., Ltd., said: "Since working here and having access to reading, I feel more fond of books. Reading helps me gain more knowledge, develop logical thinking, and solve problems more simply and easily than before. In addition, forming a reading habit has fostered a love of reading with my children every day."

In the knowledge-based economy, a strong business relies not only on finance or technology but also on a solid cultural foundation. Reading culture plays a crucial role in enhancing professional knowledge and adapting to market changes. For a sustainable and effective reading culture within businesses, in addition to building a rich and diverse library, companies, especially managers and business owners, need to take a leading role in inspiring and motivating employees to learn and accumulate knowledge, thereby improving their professional skills, encouraging innovation, and fostering a professional work environment.
