Traditional platform
The Hai Phong Union of Literature and Arts is entering a new phase of development, with both opportunities and challenges intertwined. Established in 1964, after more than 60 years of building and growth, the union has continuously developed in scale and quality of activities.
According to the Congress for the 2025-2030 term, after merging with Hai Duong , the association currently has nearly 1,000 members, operating in 9 specialized associations, along with affiliated units such as the Cua Bien Magazine - a reputable local arts and culture forum.
At the professional level, the creative force continues to be strengthened. The Hai Phong Writers' Association alone has approximately 150-160 members, regularly maintaining activities such as Vietnam Poetry Day, literary exchanges, field trips for creative writing, and introductions to new works. These are clearly professional activities that contribute to maintaining the creative rhythm and connecting the community.
Creative activities are also being organized more systematically. In 2025, the association will organize a creative writing camp from March 21st to April 21st, attracting more than 40 artists and writers to participate in field trips to museums, industrial zones, and coastal and island areas to create works about the city and the country. Connecting creative work with real life continues to be identified as the main direction.
Alongside this, many large-scale cultural and artistic events are being implemented in conjunction with important milestones. In 2025, Hai Phong will organize activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of the city's liberation (May 13, 1955 - May 13, 2025), and will also participate in the summary of 50 years of Vietnamese literature and art after the reunification of the country.
Not only focusing on internal activities, Hai Phong also actively participates in regional cooperation. The VN8+ group of literary and artistic cooperation (including Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Phu Tho , Thai Binh, etc.) maintains annual workshops and exhibitions on topical themes, creating a forum for exchange and improving the quality of creative work.
From specific activities, it can be seen that Hai Phong's literature and arts not only have a tradition but also possess a stable organizational system, a large workforce, and a continuously maintained creative environment. Writer Dang Thi Thuy, Vice President of the Hai Phong Union of Literature and Arts, commented: "The foundation for development in the new phase stems from previous generations." This inheritance is reflected not only in the workforce but also in organizational experience and accumulated cultural values.

Innovate to elevate
In the context of Hai Phong's rapid socio-economic development, literature and art also face new demands. The creative space is expanding, but this requires innovation in thinking and methods of operation.
The organizational changes following the merger have resulted in a larger and more diverse artistic community, placing high demands on coordination and creating a shared creative environment. According to writer Truong Thi Thuong Huyen, former President of the Hai Duong Union of Literature and Arts, it is necessary to preserve the "unique essence" of each region while simultaneously creating new discoveries in creative writing. The current changes both create pressure and provide motivation for writers.
Furthermore, the development of technology, especially the digital environment and artificial intelligence, is directly impacting the way works are created and disseminated. Writer Dang Thi Thuy argues that the challenge is how to ensure that works both truthfully reflect life and have the ability to spread widely in the new context.
In fact, professional associations have made initial adjustments such as strengthening creative workshops linked to real-world situations, expanding exchanges, promoting social participation, and engaging in collaborative forums. These movements contribute to creating a more flexible creative environment.
Poet Dinh Thuong, Chairman of the Hai Phong Writers' Association, emphasized: "Works must reflect the spirit of the times to have vitality." However, the biggest challenge remains overcoming oneself in a context heavily influenced by reality and new trends.
Based on its foundation in terms of personnel, organization, and activities, along with recent developments, it is evident that Hai Phong's literature and art are undergoing a significant transformation. The challenge lies in continuing to improve the quality of creative works, increasing their reach and adaptability to the new context, in order to affirm their role in the city's cultural life.
