Queue up and wait overnight to submit your application.
This year, enrollment for first grade is just as "heated" as in previous years, and this "heat" isn't limited to Hanoi alone. Over the past week, social media has been abuzz with images of parents lining up and staying overnight in front of Bai Bang Paper Primary School (Phong Chau town, Phu Ninh district, Phu Tho province) to secure a spot to submit their children's first-grade enrollment applications.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Bui Tuan Long, Head of the Education and Training Department of Phu Ninh district, said: Due to high demand from parents and limited school quotas, parents lined up early. After noticing the large crowd at the school, the school staff tried to persuade parents to go home and rest. However, perhaps due to anxiety, some parents stayed to receive their documents the next day.
It is known that Bai Bang Paper Primary School has 186 enrollment slots this year, divided into two groups. Group 1 has 127 slots for students with permanent residence in Phong Chau town. Group 2 has 59 slots for students whose permanent residence is outside Phong Chau town but live in the neighboring commune. For Group 2, the quota is 59, but the school will distribute more application forms than this number. After receiving the applications, the school will consider each case individually to ensure fairness, prioritizing convenience for students and parents, and preventing students from facing difficulties with travel distance to school.
Mr. Long also added that, starting from the next enrollment period, the department will require schools to adopt a more scientific approach to distributing enrollment applications. The goal is to make it as convenient as possible for parents and avoid unnecessary psychological pressure. Schools can categorize applicants according to different application distribution timeframes or utilize information technology.
Since its opening, Hoang Mai Primary School (Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) has attracted a large number of parents in the district who wish to enroll their children. This year, the school is recruiting 175 students for 5 classes. The school reviews the applications of eligible students based on the criteria, area, and admission principles, then conducts an assessment. Based on the approved enrollment quota, students are ranked from highest to lowest until the quota is filled. The assessment of prospective students takes place from June 12th to June 18th.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son (Group 20, Yen So Ward, Hoang Mai District, Hanoi) said: "My family registered our child online for Hoang Mai Primary School and was prepared for fierce competition. Since last year, my child has participated in handwriting practice classes, extra English and Math lessons, and has also been developing independent and focused skills... According to the school's enrollment plan, this year will be even more competitive as the number of classes has decreased; last year they enrolled over 200 students for 7 classes, but this year they will only enroll 5 classes."
According to the school, students will participate in a health assessment to learn about their physical and psychological characteristics, as well as their cognitive and language abilities, through direct testing. The school will select students based on quotas and will evaluate the assessment results on a 5-level scale (Excellent, Good, Fair, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory), ranking applicants from highest to lowest.
Multiple admission methods
In Hanoi, the Department of Education and Training has ensured that the situation of students queuing overnight to submit applications will not happen again like in previous years. However, the competition for places in first grade at prestigious schools remains as intense as in previous years. Representatives from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training stated that in the 2024-2025 school year, the number of students entering first grade is expected to increase by 7,000. This significant increase in student numbers means increased pressure on students entering the first grade.
For the upcoming school year, Doan Thi Diem Primary School (Nam Tu Liem District) will enroll 584 first-grade students for its two campuses. At the first campus in My Dinh, the school will enroll 300 students in the enhanced English program, 30 in the enhanced French program, 52 in the Cambridge International program, and 52 in the Oxford International program. At the second campus in Co Nhue (Bac Tu Liem District), the school will enroll 150 students in the enhanced English program.
According to the principal of Doan Thi Diem Primary School, Dao Thi Thuy, the school does not have an entrance exam, only interviews. Each year, the school receives approximately 1,800 applications but only has a quota of just over 500. Therefore, direct interviews are conducted to assess students' interaction skills and pronunciation, as the school teaches multiple foreign languages.
Marie Curie Primary School is recruiting 660 first-grade students across three campuses: My Dinh (Nam Tu Liem district), Kien Hung (Ha Dong district), and Viet Hung (Long Bien district). The Viet Hung campus has the highest enrollment quota with 300 students (10 classes), while the other two campuses each have 180 students (6 classes).
Regarding enrollment information, the Principal of Marie Curie Primary School, Nguyen Thi Xuan Lan, said that each school campus has its own enrollment guidelines for the 2024-2025 school year. This year, the school is organizing online registration, ending the practice of parents queuing from midnight as in previous years.
Regarding the selection process, the school welcomes students for a free one-day trial. During this trial, they learn Math, Vietnamese, and English, eat, take a nap, and participate in group activities (arts and sports ), similar to a typical school day. Students who can concentrate during class, are confident and cooperative with teachers, have good eating and sleeping habits, and demonstrate talent, dynamism, and teamwork in arts and sports activities will be selected.
Last week, Marie Curie School announced the second round of enrollment for first-grade students at its Viet Hung campus. For this campus, enrollment is based solely on interviews. Online registration is open from June 11th to 27th, with interviews scheduled for June 29th. Each student will be interviewed for 5-10 minutes. The teacher will make a preliminary assessment of the student's health, concentration ability, confidence, cooperation skills, and language reflexes.
