The market for gold, silver, and precious metals during this year's God of Wealth festival has seen some rather unusual developments. Young people lined up early to buy silver. Customers of all ages shared that they buy gold and silver at the beginning of the year to pray for good luck, so they buy in small quantities.
This year's God of Wealth Day falls on February 26th (the 10th day of the first lunar month). Considered the biggest "gold festival" of the year, it sees a surge in purchasing power and long queues in front of gold shops in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Over the past two years, at major brands in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, 9999 gold items such as plain gold rings and SJC gold bars have become scarce during the God of Wealth festival.
Long queues to buy gold have been a common sight at many retailers since before Tet (Lunar New Year). Some retailers have even had to limit the quantity they can buy, even though it's not yet the busiest trading day.
During this period, businesses are stepping up efforts to introduce gold jewelry, embossed gold leaf, mascots, or products that include a crafting fee.
For customers who prefer traditional gold purchases, many report having to visit 4-5 different shops just to buy a single gold ring, or having to queue for hours. The difficulty in buying gold through traditional channels has also led to the "black market" becoming a bustling trading hub in recent times, with prices significantly higher than the listed price.
Customers can only buy gold "on paper." Accordingly, customers place a deposit but have to wait several months to receive the goods. Businesses also have to postpone delivery dates, extending the time for receiving goods amidst high demand and scarcity. Long queues at many large stores have lasted for days now, even though customers can order online through the website.

In fact, this is not the first time the market has seen a shortage of gold rings and gold bars. This situation stems from strong demand but limited supply, and has occurred in previous years during the period after the Lunar New Year and the God of Wealth festival.
Previously, the typical scenario for gold prices on the God of Wealth Day was a sharp increase before the Lunar New Year, followed by a reversal on the 9th day of the lunar month, and then a surge on the day itself before plummeting in the following days. However, since 2022, gold prices have consistently risen after the God of Wealth Day.
Last year, the God of Wealth Day fell on February 7th. At that time, major businesses listed the price of SJC gold bars at 84.6-89.6 million VND/ounce (buy - sell), while the price of plain gold rings was listed at 86.4-89.4 million VND/ounce (buy - sell). Therefore, those who bought gold bars on the God of Wealth Day in 2025 have already made a profit of up to 94 million VND/ounce. If they bought gold rings from then until now, they would have made a profit of over 92 million VND/ounce.
Due to the booming market for gold bars and gold rings, many businesses have announced they will open earlier than usual to serve the demand for buying gold for good luck during the God of Wealth festival. Normally, businesses open at 8:30 AM and close at 6:30 PM, but during the God of Wealth festival, they will open from 6:30 AM and close when all customers have left.
