The picturesque natural scenery of An Giang

An Giang is distinguished by the Thất Sơn mountain range – a chain of seven sacred and majestic mountains amidst the vast plains. This is not only a unique geographical feature but also a symbol of the cultural and religious beliefs of the people of An Giang. Among them, Mount Cấm (Thiên Cấm Sơn), with an altitude of over 700m, is the highest mountain in the Mekong Delta region, known as the "roof of the West" or the "Da Lat of the delta". Its cool climate year-round attracts numerous tourists thanks to its natural forest ecosystem, the Vạn Linh Pagoda, the Maitreya Buddha statue, and the cable car system serving visitors. Ms. Le Phan Ngoc Bao (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) shared: “I am from An Giang, but I live, work, and have family in Ho Chi Minh City. Every year during the summer, I usually bring my whole family back to An Giang for sightseeing. During our stay, we spend a day experiencing a homestay on Mount Cam. My whole family really enjoys the atmosphere and scenery in the early morning and at sunset on the mountain; it's a feeling that's hard to describe.”

Located in the border city of Chau Doc, Mount Sam may not have the same height or natural scenery as Mount Cam, but it is associated with the legend of the Lady of the Mountain Sam, making it a pilgrimage site that attracts a large number of tourists. Visiting An Giang in the summer and immersing yourself in the Festival of the Lady of the Mountain Sam is an unmissable experience if you want to learn about the culture of the people in this border region. In addition, the Bay Nui (Seven Mountains) area also includes Mount Tuong, Mount Dai, Co To, Mount Ket, and Mount Nho, forming a series of mountains and forests interspersed with rice paddies, ideal for light trekking. Each mountain carries a folk tale, a legend, or historical relic connected to the lives of the local people.

A special feature of visiting An Giang during the summer months is that, with the guidance of local people, tourists can experience bathing in the streams. Compared to other places in the Mekong Delta, this is perhaps a unique experience only found in some of the mountains of An Giang. Around June each year, when the rains become more frequent in the Bay Nui area, the water in the streams flows more abundantly, attracting many locals and tourists to come and experience it.

Located about 30km from Chau Doc City, Tra Su Melaleuca Forest (in Tinh Bien Town) is a characteristic wetland forest of the Mekong Delta. It is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna. In Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, visitors can experience motorboat and rowboat rides through the forest, enjoying the pristine scenery, the rustling of leaves, and the beauty of nature. Tra Su Melaleuca Forest features a system of bamboo bridges, creating a unique sightseeing space. Located in Tri Ton District, Ta Pa Lake was formed from an old quarry, and over time, water accumulated to create a natural, deep, and poetic blue lake. The calm water reflects the surrounding hills and mountains, and the surrounding area is unspoiled. Not far away is Ta Pa Pagoda, a Khmer temple perched on a hilltop. The pagoda boasts unique architecture and stunning panoramic views of Tri Ton. This is an ideal destination for photography enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking inner peace.

Along with its vast rice fields, An Giang also boasts a complex network of rivers and canals, such as the Hau River, Tien River, Vinh Te Canal, and Tra Su Canal. These serve not only as waterways for transporting goods but also as sources of livelihood, water, and aquatic resources. For the people of An Giang, these rivers are not only a means of living but also symbols of the close connection between humans and nature. Beyond its beautiful natural landscapes, An Giang also possesses a unique culture with many impressive festivals, such as the Via Ba Chua Xu festival at Sam Mountain, the Bay Nui bull racing, the Sen Dolta festival of the Khmer people, and the Ramadan month of the Cham people. The diversity of ethnic groups—Kinh, Khmer, Cham, and Hoa—creates a unique cultural identity for this southwestern region of Vietnam.

When mentioning An Giang, one cannot fail to talk about the specialties made from the palmyra palm. Palmyra palms are concentrated in the two localities of Tri Ton and Tinh Bien. Tall, round-canopied palmyra palms grow in rows amidst vast rice fields, creating a peaceful and romantic landscape. Palmyra palm sap is sweet and used to make palmyra palm sugar – a specialty product of An Giang. Besides its economic value, the palmyra palm is also closely linked to the cultural and religious life of the Khmer ethnic minority, an inseparable part of their daily lives and festivals. Ms. Nhat Le (a tourist from Hanoi) shared: “My friends and I have visited An Giang four times, and we find the weather very pleasant, especially the experience of sleeping on Mount Cam; the cool air makes you forget that it's summer. Besides beautiful scenery, An Giang has many delicious dishes and attractive fruits. I really enjoy the drinks made from palmyra palm fruit.”

Traveling to An Giang during the summer is a memorable journey to immerse yourself in nature in the southwestern border region of Vietnam, explore the unique culture of the Mekong Delta, and enjoy the peaceful and rustic atmosphere. With its pristine natural beauty, diverse culture, and friendly people, An Giang is increasingly asserting its appeal on the tourism map of the Southwestern region of Vietnam.
