Me Pia Pass, also known as Khau Coc Cha, is the most majestic and famous 15-tiered pass in Cao Bang . Getting there is now very easy, however, this is the most beautiful season, and if you choose the right route from Cao Bang City to Khau Coc Cha, you will be amazed by the beauty of the Northeast region.
The correct name for this fearsome pass is Me Pja, but locals often call it Me Pia for convenience. According to locals, the Me Pia pass dates back to the French colonial era, formerly a horse-drawn trail about 40 cm wide, and even narrower in some places. Construction on the pass only began in 2009 and was completed in 2011.
The mountain pass is now more open and spacious, with a width of about 5 meters. Many consider it the most treacherous road in the Northeast region of Vietnam. The ideal time to visit this " most terrifying pass in Vietnam " is probably from October to May of the following year, as this is the dry season, making it convenient for conquering and exploring . From June to September, the area enters the rainy season, and the pass becomes extremely dangerous; it is advisable to avoid conquering Me Pia Pass during this time.
The challenging beauty of Me Pia Pass has made it famous, attracting many adventurers eager to explore " Vietnam's most terrifying pass ." The pass winds through 14 layers of curves, twists, and spectacular views. To reach the highest point and admire the panoramic view of all 14 curves of Me Pia Pass, you have to trek along the mountainside to the summit, which takes about an hour. Therefore, you should bring water and some snacks to replenish your energy.
According to the experiences of many previous travelers, there is a small house at the top of the pass that sells drinks for visitors to rest. The owner was very kind and often gave directions to the viewpoint for panoramic views and photos. Currently, due to her age, she no longer lives there. Since there is no one to look after the shop, she hired locals to put up very clear signposts so that tourists can explore on their own. After climbing the mountain, you will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the pass right before your eyes, the winding curves skillfully resembling staircases to heaven. It's important to note that: Due to the high and rugged mountainous terrain, all roads on Me Pia Pass are very difficult to navigate and are only suitable for experienced drivers. Therefore, if you are not confident in your driving skills, you should not attempt to drive up here on your own, as it could be dangerous.
