Referee Tran Dinh Thinh suffered a stroke on August 3 in Hanoi while participating in a fitness test for professional football referees ahead of the 2025-2026 season. Mr. Tran Dinh Thinh was immediately taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite the best efforts of doctors, referee Tran Dinh Thinh could not survive. Early yesterday morning (August 4), VFF announced that referee Tran Dinh Thinh had breathed his last.
The passing of the 43-year-old referee, who won the “Silver Whistle” award for Vietnamese football in the 2024-2025 season, has left the refereeing community and Vietnamese football community in mourning. Early on the morning of August 5, the body of referee Tran Dinh Thinh was brought back to his family in Dong Nai.

VFF and VPF quickly arrived in Dong Nai to pay their respects to referee Tran Dinh Thinh, and to visit, offer condolences and encourage his family and relatives.
Representing VFF is Vice President Nguyen Xuan Vu and General Secretary Nguyen Van Phu. Representing VPF (the unit that manages professional football tournaments in the country and is responsible for paying referees' fees) is Deputy General Director Vo Van Hung.
Previously, the VFF said that the Vietnam Football Federation will organize and pay for the funeral of referee Tran Dinh Thinh, as an act of gratitude for Mr. Thinh's dedication to Vietnamese football. At the same time, this is also to share the pain of referee Tran Dinh Thinh's family.
