On an airplane, personal space, even if it’s just an armrest, is a luxury. So it’s understandable that passengers would want to move to an empty row of seats, or sit next to the aisle. However, according to flight attendants, arbitrarily changing seats is not only impolite but can also affect flight safety.
“Seat swapping is not always allowed due to weight and balance issues. It is very important and is calculated to maintain the weight and balance of the aircraft,” said former flight attendant Lia Ocampo. Pilots must consider many factors before takeoff, including the amount of cargo in the hold and the seating position of passengers.
Balance is especially important on small planes. The most serious problem occurs when passengers move from the back of the plane to the front or vice versa, causing the plane's center of gravity to shift. Research from the California Aeronautics Institute also found that moving multiple passengers from seats on one side of the aisle to the other also affects the plane's horizontal balance.
What annoys flight attendants is when passengers sneakily move to another seat once they have boarded the plane. At that point, the flight attendants will most likely have to find and ask the passenger to return to his original seat, which may delay the departure time. Even if there are plenty of empty seats, don’t rush to move seats without asking the flight attendants.
Flight crews understand that there are legitimate reasons why passengers may want to change seats, and there are many situations where flight attendants may approve the request.
“These include mobility issues, claustrophobia, the need for rest, sleep disturbances from children or the desire to sit with a companion, issues with the seat or screen. These are reasons for changing seats,” says Ocampo.
A special case is to move to an exit row seat, where there is ample leg room. If the exit row seat is available, passengers can ask the flight attendant. But note that you must be in good health, over 15 years old and able to assist the crew in an emergency.
“Showing kindness and courtesy is always appreciated. When you demonstrate these qualities, flight attendants may allow you to change seats, or even receive additional snacks, drinks, or other free items during the flight,” says Ocampo.
