From the night of June 29 to the morning of June 30, Thai Nguyen City suffered from torrential rain last night, causing many central streets to be deeply flooded, traffic to be paralyzed, and water to flow into people's houses.

The water rose above half a car and flooded into people's homes, disrupting their lives. Heavy rain is forecast to continue in Thai Nguyen province in the coming hours.

Not only heavy rain, the meteorological agency warned that in the coming hours, there is a risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes in many districts in Thai Nguyen province, including: Dai Tu, Dong Hy, Phu Binh, Pho Yen City, Song Cong City, Thai Nguyen City, Vo Nhai.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that last night and this morning (June 30), there was heavy rain in the North. The rainfall from 7pm on June 29 to 8am on June 30 was over 100mm in some places such as: Che La (Tuyen Quang) 116.4mm, Nam Hoa (Thai Nguyen) 240mm, Thanh Ba ( Phu Tho ) 152.6mm...

Explaining the flooding in Thai Nguyen and heavy rain in the northern provinces, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the North will experience heavy rain lasting from now until July 2, with many places reaching 500mm. The heaviest rain is likely to be on the night of June 30 to the morning of July 1; beware of flash floods, landslides and inundation.

"We estimate that the total rainfall during this heavy rain will range from 100-300mm, with some places over 500mm," Mr. Huong informed.

According to Mr. Huong, the cause of this heavy rain is due to a low pressure trough that passes through the Northern region and tends to become stronger in the coming days. In addition, on this low trough, there is a low vortex located in the Northern region, operating at an altitude of 3,000-5,000m. The low vortex, together with the impact of the low trough, creates a large amount of humidity in the Northern region, causing very heavy rain in this area in the coming time.

“We believe that the total rainfall of up to 500mm is not a record in the near future,” Mr. Huong said.

However, Mr. Huong also warned that the center of this heavy rain is still concentrated in the Northern region. This area has recently experienced widespread and prolonged rain. The total rainfall is higher than the average of many years.

“The Northern region continues to have moderate to heavy rain over a wide area, with prolonged rain, with some areas experiencing heavy rain of over 100mm/3 hours, so we note that the most dangerous phenomenon that can cause damage to people and property is flash floods and landslides in mountainous and midland areas of the North,” said Mr. Huong.

According to the latest bulletin from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in the next 6 hours, there is a risk of flash floods, landslides, and land subsidence on steep slopes and small streams in the provinces of Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, and Lang Son.

Currently, water levels on the main rivers of the Red - Thai Binh river system are fluctuating and below alert level 1.

From today (June 30) to July 3, on the upper reaches of Thao, Lo, Cau, Thuong, Luc Nam rivers and small rivers in the Northern region, there is a possibility of a flood, with a flood amplitude of 2-4m on the rivers. There is a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, flash floods and landslides on steep slopes in mountainous areas of the North. Flood risk warning level: Level 1

Notably, floods on rivers cause inundation of low-lying areas along rivers, affecting activities such as waterway transport, aquaculture, agricultural production, people's lives and socio-economic activities.
