Why did Mourinho receive a red card?
Jose Mourinho became the center of attention in Benfica's 0-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League play-off round on the morning of February 18th.
The turning point came when Mourinho reacted angrily to referee François Letexier's decision in the 85th minute. "The Special One" argued that Vinicius Junior deserved a second yellow card after fouling Richard Rios on the edge of Real Madrid's penalty area.
Earlier, Vinicius had been cautioned for his wild celebration after scoring the opening goal with a spectacular strike. However, instead of sending off the Brazilian star, the referee only awarded Benfica a free kick, which angered Mourinho. Mourinho was immediately sent off for his reaction.
Despite being invited to the stands, Mourinho chose to sit in the front row behind Benfica's technical area. This image made many fans laugh, as he appeared to be still very close to the touchline.
Former referee Mark Clattenburg stated on television that this position is still within the technical area and could prompt UEFA to conduct further review and impose a penalty.
The match became tense from the start of the second half when Vinicius complained of racial discrimination, forcing the referee to activate UEFA's anti-discrimination procedure. Players from both teams and coaching staff clashed, a Real Madrid assistant was sent off, and objects were thrown onto the pitch from the stands.
Amidst that chaotic atmosphere, Mourinho's red card only added to the tension of the match. The suspension means the 63-year-old strategist will not be allowed to directly manage the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu.
Chaos ensued after Vinicius was subjected to racist abuse. Coach Jose Mourinho had to personally intervene to calm Vinicius down after the incident during the Champions League play-off match on the morning of February 18th.
