At the conference “Investment funds and foreign investment in the new development era of Vietnam” recently organized by the Ministry of Finance , Mr. Don Lam, General Director and Founding Shareholder of VinaCapital Group, said that in Vietnam, the number of accounts participating in direct transactions on the stock market are mainly individual investors.
It is worth mentioning that some of them approach the market by playing the stock market instead of investing long-term and strategically. When the market fluctuates abnormally, they often fall into a state of loss.
Therefore, he proposed to ban the use of the phrase "playing stocks" in the media.
To change investors' perception, he proposed publishing an "Investment Handbook" or "Personal Financial Management Handbook" to guide individual investors, especially on the risks of direct investment.
In addition, he proposed building a national online portal for investors in open-end funds, disclosing information and ranking performance to increase transparency.
He added that authorities need to strengthen supervision, improve transparency and require credit ratings for corporate bonds. Use artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to detect unusual transactions, price manipulation... to limit risks for investors.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Chi (middle) agrees with the proposal to remove the phrase "playing stocks"
Mr. Nguyen Duc Chi, Deputy Minister of Finance, agreed with the proposal to remove the phrase "playing stocks" and change the approach from "playing" to "investing" to help the market become more sustainable when personal cash flows shift to professional funds, instead of self-trading.
"Instead of trading by themselves, individual investors should use professional and reputable investment funds to harmonize benefits and share risks, helping investors benefit, Vietnam attract more investment funds, and develop a more sustainable stock market," Mr. Chi shared.
Ms. Vu Thi Chan Phuong, Chairwoman of the State Securities Commission, also said that in the Vietnamese stock market, individual investors often trade by themselves and want to control their own investment activities, and do not have the habit of investing through professional investment funds.
To develop the market sustainably, the State Securities Commission is implementing two projects including investor restructuring and investor training.
"We will increase the number of institutional investors and reduce the proportion of individual investors to ensure market stability. At the same time, we are implementing a project to train investors through securities companies, fund management companies and associations," said Ms. Phuong.
