On April 12, Professor Nguyen Viet Tien - Vice President of the Vietnam Medical Association, Permanent Vice President of the National Medical Council announced that Thien An Obstetrics Hospital ( Hanoi ) has successfully applied a new technique - Treating tumors with high-intensity focused ultrasound waves under ultrasound guidance (US - HIFU).
The above information was given at the Scientific Conference launching the technique of treating tumors using high-intensity focused ultrasound waves under ultrasound guidance (US-HIFU) held on the afternoon of April 12 in Hanoi.
New technology never seen before in Vietnam
In October 2024, Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital received the transfer of non-invasive tumor treatment technology using high-intensity focused ultrasound under ultrasound guidance and officially became the first medical unit in Vietnam to own this advanced technology. After completing the installation and technology transfer, on November 1, 2024, the Ministry of Health 's Appraisal Team inspected and evaluated the HIFU JC300 system installed at the Hospital.
According to the Ministry of Health, this is a new technique never before seen in Vietnam and has approved Thien An Obstetrics Hospital to pilot the first 20 patients treated for tumors with US-HIFU to have a basis for evaluation before implementing this technique routinely.
Speaking at the Science Conference, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan said that in recent years, the rapid development of science and technology has opened up many new opportunities in disease treatment, especially diseases related to tumors, including both benign and malignant tumors.
According to statistics, in Vietnam, the number of new cases of malignant tumors is increasing significantly, causing many challenges for the health sector in particular and the whole society in general. This requires the health sector to constantly update, innovate and apply modern treatment methods to bring the highest efficiency to patients.

The Deputy Minister of Health congratulated the doctors who pioneered the successful application of this advanced technique. This is an important milestone in the field of Vietnamese medicine, marking the progress in treatment technology, bringing the most advanced and modern medical solutions to patients. The coordination between domestic and foreign organizations and individuals has accompanied and supported the implementation of this technique in Vietnam. The cooperation of the units is a clear demonstration of the spirit of cooperation, innovation and development in the field of medicine in our country.
“In the context of world medicine making great strides, researching, approaching and applying modern, minimally invasive, patient-friendly methods is an inevitable trend and also an urgent requirement in the work of caring for and improving people's health,” Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan pointed out.
Non-invasive surgery is highly effective
After nearly 2 months of pilot implementation, Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital was officially licensed to implement the treatment of tumors using US - HIFU technique in medical examination and treatment according to Decision No. 3955/QD - BYT dated December 27, 2024 of the Minister of Health.
Professor Nguyen Viet Tien said that from November 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025, Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital treated 100 cases, including 55 cases of uterine fibroids, 41 cases of uterine adenoma, 2 cases of abdominal endometriosis, 1 case of breast fibroids, and 1 case of liver cancer. All patients had no complications after treatment and recovered quickly. The results of re-examination after one month in many patients showed that the tumor volume had decreased significantly by more than 60% for uterine fibroids and more than 80% for uterine adenoma. Symptoms of abdominal pain, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, menorrhagia, hemorrhage... caused by large tumors in the past were greatly reduced.

Ms. Pham Thi HT (29 years old, in Ninh Binh) suffered from multiple uterine fibroids (the largest tumor was nearly 5cm) and was one of the first patients to be treated with US-HIFU technique at the Hospital. The tumor caused pain and prolonged her menstrual cycle, and was also one of the reasons why she had an early miscarriage from the 20th week and could not become a mother. With US-HIFU technique, less than a day after treatment, Ms. T. was able to walk and live normally. A follow-up examination after 1 month showed that the nearly 5cm fibroid had reduced in size to 2cm - an extremely positive result, giving her more hope on her journey to find her beloved child. Currently, patient T. has been pregnant naturally for 5 weeks.
Commenting on cases of uterine fibroid treatment with this new technique, Professor Nguyen Viet Tien said that the most important advantage of this technique is that the patient retains the uterus and the patient's ability to give birth is maintained. Compared to previous open surgery or laparoscopic surgery, the uterus must be incised. After removing the tumor, even if it is sutured, the uterine muscles are still weak. In some cases, when pregnant, the uterus enlarges and the surgical site ruptures (uterine rupture). As for US - HIFU, currently in the world there are tens of thousands of cases of pregnancy and childbirth, but there has not been a single case of uterine rupture after treating uterine fibroids with US - HIFU.
Professor Nguyen Viet Tien analyzed that the technique of treating tumors with high-intensity focused ultrasound waves under ultrasound guidance is a non-invasive surgery (no knife) to treat tumors, which has been applied in many countries around the world. This is considered an outstanding invention of world medicine - non-invasive surgery. US - HIFU has a breakthrough effect in treating uterine fibroids, endometriosis, cesarean scar pregnancy, breast tumors... other benign and malignant tumors in soft tissue, liver, kidney, pancreas, bone, breast...
US-HIFU works on the principle of using the system's probe to convert electrical energy into sound energy, converting sound energy into heat energy, using the penetrating and converging properties of ultrasound waves to directly focus on target tissues in the body. The temperature in the biological convergence area will immediately increase to 100 degrees Celsius, thereby denaturing the protein and causing the target tissue to become irreversibly coagulated, disrupting the blood supply to the pathogenic cells. The target tissue is "killed" thereby achieving the highest treatment effect. The tumor will self-destruct over time.
The process of treating tumors with high-intensity focused ultrasound under ultrasound guidance is performed without the use of deep anesthesia, without the use of a knife. During the treatment, the patient remains awake, does not bleed, is painless and can be discharged after 1 day, even on the same day.
US-HIFU technique helps patients improve their quality of life and longevity thanks to its advantages: non-invasive surgery, organ preservation, organ rehabilitation, fertility preservation, shortening hospital stay, treating large tumors... Instead of having to go abroad for expensive medical treatment, Vietnamese people can now access this advanced medical technique right in the country./.
