A 3.5kg box of imported kiwis costs only 150,000 VND, or nearly 43,000 VND/kg. However, in Vietnamese markets, not only kiwis but many other imported fruits, once high-end, are now sold at cheap prices.
This morning, Ms. Pham Kim Tuyen - a fruit wholesaler in Hoang Mai ( Hanoi ) - advertised for sale imported yellow kiwifruit from New Zealand at 150,000 VND/box weighing 3.5 kg for customers buying 10 boxes or more.
For customers ordering 1 box, the price is 190,000 VND, ordering 2 boxes is 180,000 VND/box, ordering 5 boxes is 170,000 VND/box. In total, each 1kg of imported kiwi costs from 49,000-54,000 VND/kg depending on the quantity purchased at each time.
Ms. Tuyen said, this is a golden kiwi imported from New Zealand, size 22 fruits/box. Each box weighs 3.5kg, the fruit is firm, ripe and sweet, not a knock-off. Previously, this size of kiwi usually cost 400-500 thousand VND/box. Now kiwi has dropped sharply to become cheap goods, only a few tens of thousands of VND/kg, sold in abundance in Vietnamese markets.

“This is the cheapest price since this fruit was imported to Vietnam,” she commented. There were even days when she sold wholesale quantities at prices ranging from 130,000-140,000 VND/box (about 37,000-40,000 VND/kg). Therefore, the average amount of kiwi sold each day was up to nearly 1,000 boxes.
For about 2 weeks now, imported golden kiwis have been all over online markets, big and small. A 3.5kg box of kiwis retails for between 190,000 and 250,000 VND.
Similarly, Taiwanese red-fleshed kiwis used to be sold in stores for 200,000-250,000 VND/box of 400-500 grams. With the same weight, the price is now only 40,000-45,000 VND/box.
In addition to kiwi, many other imported fruits that were once high-end are now popular and are bustling with customers.
For example, Envy apples - the most expensive imported apples on the market (excluding Japanese apples) when consumers have to spend from 200,000 to 350,000 VND to buy 1kg depending on the type. Now, this imported apple (size 5 fruits/kg) is sold in large quantities by many stores, priced from 70,000 to 90,000 VND/kg. Compared to 2-3 years ago, the price is only half, even 1/3.
Cherub apples - a variety of apples that are not too crunchy but have a very strong flavor - are now being sold by many stores for 45,000-50,000 VND/kg.
Or Yunnan milk grapes, when they first appeared, cost 250,000-350,000 VND/kg - one of the most expensive Chinese fruits sold in the Vietnamese market. However, this year, this fruit has entered the Vietnamese market at a super cheap price. Currently, consumers can buy 1kg of large, glossy milk grapes at market stalls for only 60,000-70,000 VND.
Tunisian pomegranates used to be one of the imported fruits classified as high-end with a selling price of 170,000-250,000 VND/kg. However, in recent months, the price of this type of pomegranate has dropped to 35,000-50,000 VND/kg.
In just 10 months of 2023, our country spent 1.6 billion USD importing fruits and vegetables (Photo: Nhat Sinh).
Talking to PV.VietNamNet , Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, manager of a large fruit store chain in Hanoi, said that like any item, when there is a large supply, the price will be cheaper, especially the more supply, the cheaper the price.
To serve domestic consumption, our country imports many types of fruit. Some of these fruits cannot be grown in Vietnam, or have small yields. Initially, when imported goods are few and supplies are scarce, prices will be high. When supplies are abundant and large quantities are imported, prices will automatically cool down.
In particular, in recent years, our country has participated in free trade agreements, and import taxes on fruits and vegetables have almost dropped to 0%. Therefore, fruit prices have also decreased quite sharply due to no tax.
“The prices of many imported fruits have dropped sharply, becoming as cheap as domestic fruits,” he said. Consumers prefer imported fruits. Imported fruits are now even cheaper, so sales have increased sharply.
Like milk grapes, there are days when the chain of stores he manages sells up to 400-500 boxes. Kiwis are sold twice as much as milk grapes during this time, and employees are tired of closing orders because a 3.5kg box costs only 230,000 VND.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, by the end of October 2023, our country spent more than 1.6 billion USD to import fruits and vegetables. On average, the import value of this item per month is up to 160 million USD.
