This afternoon, in response to a reporter's question asking about Vietnam's reaction to the tense developments in the border area between Cambodia and Thailand, Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated: "Vietnam expresses concern about the current tense developments in the border area between Thailand and Cambodia."
Thailand and Cambodia are neighbors of each other and of Vietnam and are also members of ASEAN.
"The most important thing now is that both sides exercise utmost restraint, do not use force, do not let tensions escalate, peacefully and satisfactorily resolve disagreements on the basis of fundamental principles of international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) and in the spirit of ASEAN friendship and solidarity, for the long-term interests of both sides and the region," the spokesperson emphasized.
Thai and Cambodian troops clashed at the Ta Muen Tho temple area on the morning of July 24. The situation quickly escalated when both sides used heavy weapons such as F-16 fighters and BM-21 rocket artillery to attack each other.
According to Thai press statistics, 11 civilians and one Thai soldier were killed in clashes on the border with Cambodia.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has sent a letter to Acting President of the UN Security Council Asim Iftikhar Ahmad to request an urgent meeting regarding the tense situation between his country and Thailand.
