More than 250 guests, including representatives of the Australian government, agencies, organizations and a large diplomatic delegation in Canberra, attended the reception to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day. Among the guests were Australian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Michelle Chan and representatives of the government of the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam highlighted the significance of National Day and emphasized Vietnam's impressive socio -economic and foreign achievements, notably the impressive GDP growth rate in recent years and expected to reach 6.5% this year, making Vietnam one of the ten fastest growing countries in the world. Ambassador Pham Hung Tam affirmed that Vietnam's economy is also considered to be one of the most open in the world with total trade turnover exceeding 1,000 billion AUD last year. At the same time, Vietnam is also an attractive investment destination, attracting an average of 55 billion USD in foreign investment capital each year in recent years.

Regarding bilateral relations, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam announced that the two countries had upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership when Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited Australia in March 2024, making Australia one of the seven countries with the highest level of foreign relations with Vietnam. Currently, the two countries are each other's 10th largest trading partners, Australia is among the five countries that are favorite study abroad destinations for Vietnamese youth with more than 30,000 students studying here, and Vietnam is one of the favorite tourist destinations for Australians with nearly 300,000 visitors to Vietnam in the 7 months of 2024.

The Vietnamese community in Australia is growing strongly, with the majority supporting the friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The upgraded relationship also increases trust between the two countries, creating a foundation for both sides to promote relations in the fields of defense, security, science, technology and people-to-people connections.

Ambassador Pham Hung Tam said that Vietnam and Australia share common interests in promoting a peaceful region where international law is respected and cooperate closely in many regional and international forums.

As a guest of honor at the party, Australian Deputy Foreign Minister Michelle Chan affirmed that the relationship between the two countries has never been stronger than it is today and Australia considers the relationship with Vietnam one of the most important, diverse and dynamic relationships of this country. Ms. Michelle Chan affirmed that the connection between the two countries is taking place in a diverse and profound manner. Australia is a pioneer investor in Vietnam with projects such as Vietnam's first submarine optical cable line implemented by Telstra. Australia also participated in the construction of Vietnam's first high-voltage power transmission line, the first international university in Vietnam is Australian... Now, the leaders of the two countries regularly exchange visits, Australia has also provided 3 billion AUD in aid to Vietnam and currently the two countries are making many efforts to promote cooperation in trade, investment, energy and climate.

Ms. Michelle Chan affirmed that the two countries' upgrading of their relationship to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflects the depth of strategic trust and shared ambition of the two countries for a bilateral relationship in which the two countries not only cooperate with each other but also cooperate in multilateral mechanisms, including ASEAN, to strengthen stability, rules and norms that underpin regional security and prosperity.

Attending the reception of the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra were many overseas Vietnamese who have lived in Australia for many years, Vietnamese businessmen, scientists and Vietnamese students studying in Australia. The Vietnamese people in Australia are very happy with the achievements that the country has achieved over the past 7 decades and have high hopes for the development of the relationship between Australia and Vietnam.

UTS student Nguyen Hai Anh was able to attend National Day in a faraway country for the first time, which made her feel emotional because even though she was in a foreign land, she could still feel the love and warmth of the Vietnamese community in Australia.

As a guest at the party, Mr. Luyen Quang Huy, who was wearing a red flag shirt with a yellow star and a watch with a map of Vietnam on it, Mr. Huy has lived in Canberra for 5 years and every year he participates in the National Day and Community Tet parties organized by the Embassy. Every time he attends these events, he always feels overwhelmed with emotion and misses his homeland and country. Mr. Huy believes that events such as National Day and Community Tet organized by the Embassy have connected the feelings of Vietnamese people living far away from home.
