(Dan Tri Newspaper) - In terms of international comparison, according to the global ranking of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Vietnam achieved a score of 73.32 and ranked 54th out of 166 ranked countries.
Vietnam is doing better in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. On September 25th, at the Government headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long chaired the first meeting of the National Council on Sustainable Development. At the meeting, Council members assessed the current context for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals globally, as warned by the UN Secretary-General, who urged governments to intensify action as the roadmap towards these goals may be difficult to implement. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment , the latest report from the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESC) noted that progress in implementing the SDGs is uneven and disproportionate to the requirements set for the region. Although ODA reached a high level in 2023, FDI for developing countries decreased by 7%; the financing shortfall for sustainable development is approximately US$4 trillion. Vietnam has been highly praised by the United Nations and various countries and international organizations for its efforts in implementing the SDGs. In terms of international comparisons, according to this year's global SDG index ranking, Vietnam achieved a score of 73.32 and ranked 54th out of 166 countries. Vietnam's score and position have improved compared to the 2023 ranking. Within the East and South Asian region, Vietnam ranks only behind Thailand, demonstrating the very positive international assessment of Vietnam's achievements in implementing the SDGs.

Continuing to better implement sustainable development plans and programs. Concluding the meeting, and appreciating the contributions, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long emphasized that Vietnam has seriously implemented the SDGs in the current socio -economic context. Assessing the global and domestic context, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that there are still many challenges to the progress and quality of implementing the SDGs, with the risk that many of the United Nations' SDGs will not be achieved. The Deputy Prime Minister requested ministries and agencies to continue to seriously and better implement the programs and plans issued by the Government and the Prime Minister. From the perspective of their respective sectors and fields, ministries and agencies should advise the Council on the organization and implementation of policies, strategies, and mechanisms related to the SDGs. Government leaders noted that the Ministry of Planning and Investment, as well as other ministries and agencies, should provide broader and more comprehensive advice and proposals covering all areas within the functions and tasks assigned to the Council, including inter-sectoral macroeconomic issues. The Deputy Prime Minister agreed that a mid-term review of the National Action Plan for implementing Vietnam's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be conducted in 2025, updating the situation in the context of the United Nations' adoption of the "Pact for the Future"; and simultaneously advising the Prime Minister on organizing a National Conference on Sustainable Development in 2025.
