Writing is like breathing.

Viewing writing as naturally as breathing is like building a circulatory system that nourishes a healthy mind and body.

Nurturing emotions

Intuitive writing – have you ever heard of it? Simply put, intuitive writing is using your intuition to write. With traditional writing, writers build a structure for their writing and then apply writing techniques and select words to create content according to their own ideas.

With intuitive writing, inspiration can strike at any time without prior preparation or planning. To allow intuition to guide your words, you first need to view writing as a nurturing process, not just something that happens when you sit in front of a computer or move your pen across a blank page to convey your thoughts and feelings in writing.

When we "breathe," we broaden our horizons, absorbing new knowledge and experiences. This could be from books, articles, conversations with friends, or even moments of quiet solitude. It's also a process of accumulation, where each small piece contributes to the overall picture of life.

But simply "inhaling" isn't enough; writing is how we "exhale," transforming what we've learned into thoughts and stories. It's a creative process where every word, every sentence, carries a part of the writer within it.

Writing is not just about recording what we have learned, but also a profound reflection of our soul and intellect. Writers must view the entire process, from acquiring knowledge, experiences, and inspiration to the final written word, as a cyclical process, much like the circulatory system of the body.

To write effectively, one must allow time to balance their breathing; it's not just about inhaling or exhaling, but a harmonious coordination of both. In other words, to delve deeply into writing, one must delve deeply into life, allowing oneself to savor it.

The renowned writer Haruki Murakami is famous for his consistent daily writing routine. He typically wakes up at 4 a.m., writes for 5-6 hours, and then spends the rest of the day reading, jogging, and reflecting. This process helps him maintain a balance between studying and writing, while also nurturing inspiration and ideas for his works.

Engage in self-dialogue through writing.

"A Moveable Feast" is a memoir by Ernest Hemingway, recounting his years living and working in Paris during the 1920s. This was a crucial period in Hemingway's writing career, during which he met and befriended many other famous writers and artists such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and Ezra Pound.

Beyond details about his writing habits, Hemingway also emphasized the importance of living and experiencing life in order to write authentically and profoundly. He often spent time observing and recording the small details of everyday life, from conversations at cafes to the street scenes of Paris. These experiences became an endless source of inspiration for his works.

The book also addresses the difficulties and challenges Hemingway faced during his writing career, from finding inspiration to dealing with external pressures. However, he always persevered and constantly strived to improve his writing skills. Hemingway believed that maintaining a consistent writing routine and balancing "breathing" and "inhaling" was key to creating outstanding works.

As a practitioner and trainer of intuitive writing, I've never called it a healing method, although some students have told me they've experienced spiritual healing through this practice. Some rediscovered their passions for painting and photography. Some learned to come to terms with their inner voices. Some wept as they delved into painful memories, breaking free from the joy of confronting the dark, locked rooms they'd been in. Some gained confidence, no longer fearing that what they wrote might displease others. Above all, they were able to connect with their past, present, and future.

Simply put, "healing" means facing, accepting, and overcoming psychological shocks or life events, preventing oneself from being overly affected or haunted by emotional trauma. On the journey of exploring the realm of the soul through writing, old wounds gradually heal.

Let's begin by practicing how to properly nurture our souls. The journey of connecting with ourselves through "writing as we breathe" is the most effective healing method.
