To ensure smooth network operation during the period when international Internet connections are having problems, from February 11, the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group ( Viettel ) will share 100Gbps capacity to support VNPT in network rescue.

Viettel ensures to continue supporting VNPT to open more international connection capacity.

As the enterprise with the largest and most modern telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam, Viettel currently owns 4 submarine optical cable lines and 2 international terrestrial cable lines. When the submarine optical cable has problems, Viettel has 2 submarine optical cable lines including AAE-1 line to Singapore and IA line to Hong Kong. Of which, IA cable line is the only line that Viettel has ever exploited.

To ensure annual bandwidth growth and ensure backup for the number of submarine optical cables that are frequently broken, Viettel will deploy 4 more submarine cables from now until 2030, of which the ADC line has completed the deployment and is expected to be put into operation in 2023. This cable line increases by 18Tbps, helping to triple the current capacity (Viettel's international connection capacity is currently nearly 9Tbps).

In addition, Viettel always reserves 40% of international capacity to be ready for cable breaks, avoiding affecting customer service experience. When there is a high load phenomenon, the information technology systems built by Viettel's own staff will automatically balance the load, route and regulate capacity on the remaining submarine cables and land cables.

Looking at history, it can be seen that every year, Vietnam has about 10 submarine cable breaks, the average break time is 1 month because the repair of submarine optical cables is extremely complicated, and requires permission to enter the territory of the countries the cable passes through. Therefore, usually only 3/5 submarine cable lines operate simultaneously.

That is also the reason why Viettel always maintains at least 40% of international connection capacity as a reserve to ensure service quality for customers, but it increases investment costs as well as the load on the operating force.

It is expected that the APG cable line will be the first cable line to be restored in March 2023, helping to restore 25% of international connection capacity for Viettel.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Director of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Information and Communications, with 4 submarine optical cable lines continuously having problems causing partial or complete loss of capacity on the line, all businesses are affected.

In the face of such a serious incident, Viettel's services were basically still guaranteed even during peak hours, helping to ensure Viettel's service quality was outstanding. In particular, the group of customers using private channels, 3G and 4G data were not affected because they had been configured for priority in advance. As soon as the incident occurred, Viettel invested in adding 30% more international transmission capacity with partners to speed up the restoration of submarine cables.
