In recent days, social networks have been “stirred up” by a video recording the emotional and proud moment of the resident doctors of Hanoi Medical University when choosing their major. In a solemn auditorium, amidst the warm applause and the watchful eyes of their peers, each young doctor stepped up to the podium, choosing the professional path they would pursue for the rest of their lives. The video is not simply a ritual of choosing a major, but rather a recognition of thousands of hours of hard work, a proud nod from teachers, and a silent commitment from young people on the path to knowledge.
Residency is the most prestigious training program in the Vietnamese medical education system. The journey to become a resident is a race of scores, a challenge of courage, determination and ideals. After 6 years of university, plus 3 years of specialized study in a stressful hospital environment, the resident has accepted to "step back" personal joys to move towards the light of medical knowledge.
I was really “intoxicated” by the short videos of the moment when the resident doctors loudly shouted out their majors. Not only watching the top 10, top 20 over and over again, but also the videos of the young female doctor choosing forensic medicine, the male doctor choosing hematology and blood transfusion, or the only male doctor in the past 3 years choosing human anatomy all brought me deep emotions. I secretly thought, how could that petite, young female doctor be so brave to choose forensic medicine to pursue – a major that just thinking about it makes me shiver…

My emotions also blend with the general emotions of the community when under each "viral" video are millions of likes and admiring comments. There are students who send their thanks because "I was motivated when watching this video". There are parents who are moved "My child watched it and said he wanted to be a doctor like you"; "So great, kids. This is truly the beauty of knowledge!"; "I pray for the good fortune of the resident doctors for my children". Or many young people leave lines of exclamation: "Even more fascinating than watching a beauty pageant"; "Resident doctors are the quintessence of the country because this competition is extremely difficult, they are the best among the best"; "I watch it over and over again without getting bored, you guys are really inspiring. Thank you so much!". Some young people even jokingly suggested that "Match Day - Registration Day for the Resident Doctor major" should be broadcast on VTV to see the "quintessence of the country"...
The strong spread of the video of the resident doctor choosing a major shows that society always has a special admiration for knowledge. When social networks are flooded with images of flashiness, sometimes shallow and empty, the simple video of choosing a major is like something truly rooted, sustainable and fundamental. It inspires and makes us believe that true knowledge is still quietly accumulated, nurtured and spread.
The beauty of knowledge does not need noise to be appreciated because it always shines by its own value!
