On the afternoon of October 7th, leaders of the Department of Industry and Trade of Lang Son province confirmed that a section of the dam at the Bac Khe 1 hydropower plant had broken at around 1 PM that day due to the immense pressure of the incoming water.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the initial crack was about 1 meter wide. However, because this is an earthen dam, the crack is at risk of further widening under the pressure of the water flow.
Following the incident, water from the reservoir flowed downstream, affecting several residential areas in Tan Tien commune. Fortunately, having anticipated the risks from the heavy rain, the local authorities had relocated residents in the affected areas to safe locations days in advance.
Currently, authorities are urgently implementing on-site response plans, while continuing to provide updates and preparing to evacuate areas at risk of new impacts.
According to the head of the Lang Son Department of Industry and Trade: "Due to the impact of the recent heavy rains, many households in the downstream areas have been evacuated to safe locations. Therefore, there have been no casualties so far. We are currently continuing to review other residential areas to ensure maximum safety."
