Dienbien.gov.vn - During a working trip to Dien Bien province, on the afternoon of April 24, the Lao PDR delegation led by Senior Lieutenant General Souvone Leuangbounmy, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR visited the Macadamia tree planting model in Pu Nhi commune, Dien Bien Dong district. Accompanying the delegation, on the Dien Bien province side were comrades: Vu A Bang - Provincial Party Committee member, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; representatives of the provincial National Assembly delegation, Department of Agriculture and Environment, Department of Foreign Affairs.

Lao PDR delegation visited the Macadamia tree planting model in Pu Nhi commune, Dien Bien Dong district.

At the Macadamia tree planting model (Pu Nhi commune, Dien Bien Dong district), the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dien Bien province reported and provided general information about Macadamia trees and the development of Macadamia trees in Dien Bien province. Specifically, Macadamia trees were introduced by former Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Cong Tan for experimental planting in a number of districts and Dien Bien Phu city since 2003. In 2016, Dien Bien province assessed and confirmed that Macadamia trees are suitable for climate and soil conditions and are oriented to develop into a key agricultural product. The province has approved investment policies for 13 Macadamia tree planting projects, with a concentrated planting scale of over 88,000 hectares of Macadamia trees. According to the approved forestry economic project, by 2030 Dien Bien province is oriented to plant 120,000 hectares. Up to now, the province has planted 10,308 hectares of Macadamia trees in the districts of Tuan Giao, Muong Ang, Dien Bien, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Nhe and Dien Bien Phu city.

Enterprises with macadamia planting investment projects in the province are employing over 600 regular workers and over 1,000 seasonal workers (mainly local workers). Regular workers are paid an average salary of 5 - 12 million VND/month, and enjoy health insurance and social insurance benefits; seasonal workers are paid from 200 - 300 thousand VND/day.

In order to develop Macadamia trees in the province sustainably, ensuring the harmony of interests of both businesses and people participating, Dien Bien province has oriented some contents on mechanisms and policies for Macadamia tree planting projects. Accordingly, investors can choose 1 of 2 forms or combine both forms: The State leases land to investors to implement Macadamia tree planting projects according to the provisions of the law on land; People cooperate with investors to implement Macadamia tree planting projects under the form of joint contracts.

Macadamia planting projects in Dien Bien province mainly focus on developing high-yield, high-quality Macadamia varieties recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Currently, most of the Macadamia varieties used by businesses are imported from seed production companies in the Central Highlands.

To proactively source seeds for Macadamia tree development, currently, the province has 2 Macadamia orchards with 595 recognized Macadamia trees. Macadamia Investment and Development Joint Stock Company is currently producing and trading Macadamia seedlings with a production quantity of about 300,000 trees/year.

Since 2015, some areas of Macadamia trees in Dien Bien province have been harvested. Up to now, the whole province has about 1,000 hectares of Macadamia trees for harvest, with a yield of over 1,000 tons of fresh fruit. In the province, there is currently a Macadamia processing facility of Dien Bien Macadamia and Forestry Seed Development Investment Joint Stock Company with a processing capacity of about 9 tons of Macadamia fruit/year. The products produced are cracked Macadamia nuts, Macadamia kernels, Macadamia wine, Macadamia essential oil, mainly consumed in the province. In the coming time, when the Macadamia output is stable, Macadamia growing enterprises in the province will invest in building processing factories to deeply process Macadamia products.

In the province, 10,308 hectares of Macadamia trees have been planted in the districts of Tuan Giao, Muong Ang, Dien Bien, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Nhe and Dien Bien Phu city.

Implementing the agreed content in the Minutes of the signing of cooperation between the Delegation of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dien Bien province and the Delegation of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry of the three provinces of Udomxay, Phongsaly and Luang Prabang, the People's Committee of Dien Bien province has issued a Plan to send officials to Laos to support the provinces of Luang Prabang, Udomxay and Phongsaly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in pilot planting of Macadamia trees. Specifically, in Luang Prabang province: Instructions on care and fertilization for the model of planting 6.5 hectares of Macadamia in 2023 in Vieng Kham district and Phon Thong district. Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dien Bien province is sending 01 official to directly guide people in care and fertilization of Macadamia trees planted in 2023 (year 3). In Udomsay and Phongsaly provinces, it is planned to plant 10 hectares (05 hectares/province): Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dien Bien province is sending staff to support and provide technical guidance. It is expected that the planting will be completed in May to June 2025. Currently, 50% of the plan has been dug./.
