The net-casting dance of fishermen on Ly Son Island.

Việt NamViệt Nam03/10/2023

From May to July each year, fishermen in Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai province) are busy heading out to sea using seine nets to catch seafood, mainly anchovies. This daily life has become an interesting subject for photography enthusiasts. The album "Ly Son in the Seine Net Season" by author Vu Minh Duc, submitted to the "Happy Vietnam" photo and video contest, features images of green seine nets dancing on the sea in various shapes, such as circles, hearts, or lotus leaves.

Viewed from above, each net is stretched taut across the sea, as if arranged by an artist's skillful hands. Purse seine nets, which operate on the principle of filtering water to catch fish, are lowered from the ship and pulled back up. Purse seine nets are specifically designed to catch schools of fish and are only deployed to a certain depth. When a school of anchovies is detected, the fishermen use the nets to encircle and catch them. The ship is currently hauling in the purse seine net. During the fishing process, the shape of the purse seine net constantly changes. From the moment it is lowered, it is a flat net; at the end of the lowering process, it is a cylindrical shape; and during the reeling process, it takes on a spherical cone shape.

Ly Son Island District in Quang Ngai Province consists of a large island, known locally as Cu Lao Re, and a smaller island. Along the coast of both islands, many stretches of ancient, jet-black volcanic rock are now smoothed by the waves. Nestled between the curved, rocky shores of the smaller island are bays of golden sand reflecting in the clear blue water. The lives of the local people are primarily based on fishing. In addition, thanks to its pristine beauty, Ly Son Island has attracted domestic and international tourists in recent years.
