UEFA has chosen Polish referee Szymon Marciniak to officiate this season's Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan.
Working alongside Szymon Marciniak on the field were his two compatriots, Tomasz Listkiewicz and Pawel Sokolnicki. Notably, this trio of referees also officiated the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France.
By officiating the 2022 World Cup final, Szymon Marciniak became the first Polish referee to be entrusted with this important responsibility by FIFA. Prior to this, Szymon Marciniak had also officiated several matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Meanwhile, other Polish referees, including Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Bartosz Frankowski, will be in charge of the VAR room, while the fourth official will be Istvan Kovacs.
Born on January 7, 1981, Szymon Marciniak became a FIFA referee in 2013.
In European football, this referee has officiated many important matches. Szymon Marciniak is considered the best referee in Europe currently. Most recently, the referee born in 1981 officiated the second leg of the Champions League semi-final between Manchester City and Real Madrid.
Referee Szymon Marciniak is a strict referee but knows when to be firm and when to be flexible, possessing very high professional skills. He is a good mediator in situations where players from both sides are clashing or showing signs of arguing. Notably, he doesn't issue many cards in the matches he officiates. Statistics from 2022 show he only issued one red card.
The Champions League final between Manchester City and Inter Milan will take place at 2:00 AM on June 11th (Vietnam time) at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
