Soldiers used ashes to improve the soil.

The 20th Regiment’s military base is a series of sandy and alum-contaminated soils. With their industrious nature and hard-working spirit, the officers and soldiers have improved the soil by dredging mud from the pond and covering it on the surface, then hoeing the stream to make ridges to hold the soil; utilizing cow dung and dry straw composted into organic matter combined with rice husk ash to improve the soil.

Officers and soldiers nurture eggplant plants.

After the land conversion step, the important step is to choose good varieties suitable for the region and weather. With many years of experience and research from many sources, the unit has chosen eggplant varieties suitable for the soil and conducted trial planting.

The eggplant varieties chosen by officers and soldiers must be suitable for the local soil.

Soldier Huynh Ngoc Thien - Squad 6, Platoon 2, Company 5 said: "In the care stage, we regularly water and use organic fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers. Thanks to choosing the right variety and planting with the right techniques, the plants grow well and develop evenly. Seeing the results of our efforts, we are very happy."

The soldiers work tirelessly to take care of the eggplant garden so that the plants grow well.

With the skillful care of the officers and soldiers, the unit's eggplant garden has developed very well. After nearly 2 months of planting, the eggplant garden has begun to harvest with a yield of 2 tons/1000m2.

The characteristic of eggplant is that it bears fruit in turn, so the harvesting process takes place regularly, 2-3 times a week. Eggplant is easy to preserve and can be kept for a long time, so soldiers really like it.

Thanks to the efforts of the officers and soldiers, the eggplants were large and had shiny skin.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Thanh Bao - Deputy Commander of Regiment 20 shared that thanks to overcoming difficulties, officers and soldiers have turned barren, heavily acidic land into lush green orchards, bringing high productivity, meeting over 80% of the unit's vegetable, root and fruit needs.

"In the coming time, the unit will continue to research, improve the land, and expand this farming model. Not only eggplant, but the unit will also choose other suitable vegetables, tubers, and fruits to diversify and enrich the soldiers' meals," said Lieutenant Colonel Le Thanh Bao.

The soldiers were happy when their hard work was rewarded with a bumper crop.

For the “farmer” soldiers of Regiment 20, turning barren land into lush vegetable gardens has become a regular activity, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of the soldiers. At the same time, it affirms the sense of responsibility of the soldier who is patient, hardworking, proactive in overcoming difficulties, and turning challenges into opportunities.
