On June 2, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that negotiations to reach a new global agreement to respond to future pandemics will be completed by 2025 or earlier if possible.
WHO's 194 member states have been negotiating for two years to create a binding framework for international pandemic preparedness, preparedness and response. The effort was accelerated after the Covid-19 pandemic killed more than 7 million people, devastated economies and crippled health systems worldwide. The WHO initially aimed to reach an agreement this week, but negotiations have dragged on amid deep divisions between rich and poor countries over issues such as vaccine sharing and response measures. However, countries have reached consensus on a revised International Health Regulations (IHR), which would update existing health rules to be legally binding.
In a statement, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “The historic decisions taken today demonstrate the shared desire of Member States to protect people at common risk in public health emergencies and future pandemics.”
