The 2026 World Cup hasn't officially started yet, but host nation Mexico is already facing some undesirable images. In Mexico City, members of the CNTE teachers' union dismantled and set fire to numerous giant models of football players erected to promote the World Cup.

The incident took place on a major avenue in the capital, where statues of players wearing the jerseys of various national teams participating in the tournament were on display. According to local media, protesters pulled down the models, which were about 5 meters tall, stripped off their outer clothing, and set them on fire.

Not only were the player statues destroyed, but many of the decorative balls used for World Cup promotion were also vandalized.

The incident occurred amidst ongoing protests by the CNTE union demanding higher wages and pension reforms. This is one of the most influential labor unions in Mexico and has led numerous demonstrations in recent weeks.

What worries the host country's officials is that the protests are no longer limited to ordinary labor demands but are exploiting the excitement of the World Cup to put pressure on the government . In the latest marches, protesters chanted slogans like "The ball will not roll," as a warning that they are ready to continue their protests throughout the tournament.

Mexico is one of three countries co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, along with the United States and Canada.

The situation became so tense that President Claudia Sheinbaum had to switch a face-to-face meeting with union representatives to a virtual one after protesters blockaded the State Palace area.

Earlier, clashes between protesters and riot police also occurred near Mexico City's famous Zocalo Square. Union leaders said at least five people were injured in the clashes.

The wave of protests is also beginning to impact business activity in the heart of the capital. Many businesses fear that prolonged instability will affect the number of tourists they expect to receive during the World Cup.
