Whale carcass in Co To sea was salvaged and buried

Co To District People's Committee said the whale's body was discovered on the afternoon of April 29. Its head, tail, and gills were badly decomposed, and it was likely that it had died many days ago.

Authorities and local people pulled the fish carcass closer to shore and used an excavator to bury it according to coastal customs.

According to folk beliefs, whales are gods of fortune, often helping fishermen in distress at sea. Therefore, when whales are found dead at sea, people in Co To district often bring them ashore for a proper burial.

In September 2023, many whale pods, each pod of 3-5 whales, each weighing from 5 to 10 tons, came to Co To sea to forage.
