On the afternoon of September 19th in Washington D.C., USA, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai on the occasion of attending the High-Level General Debate of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the success of President Biden's state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Trade Representative Katherine Tai expressed their pleasure at meeting again after the Trade Representative's visit to Vietnam in February 2023.
Both sides agreed that establishing a framework for a comprehensive strategic partnership would open a new phase for extensive cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of economics, trade, and investment.
Thanking the US Trade Representative for his contributions to the development of bilateral relations, the Prime Minister suggested that both sides actively coordinate to quickly realize the agreements of the two countries' high-level leaders, including the US prioritizing the promotion of the roadmap for recognizing Vietnam's market economy status, further opening its market to Vietnamese goods such as textiles, footwear, and agricultural products, while also adequately considering the interests of Vietnamese businesses and not applying trade defense measures against Vietnamese goods on the basis of ensuring balance, equality, and mutual benefit.
The head of government proposed that the two sides create breakthroughs in cooperation in science and technology, innovation, and education and training; and requested the United States to support Vietnam in building a supply chain related to semiconductor chips.
The U.S. Trade Representative affirmed the significance and importance of the two countries establishing a framework for a comprehensive strategic partnership, stating that this is an opportunity for both sides to cooperate in promoting economic and trade relations.
Ms. Katherine Tai reiterated her profound impressions of her visit to Vietnam, emphasizing that the visit helped her understand Vietnam much better. She affirmed that the United States always considers Vietnam an important partner in the region; and expressed her desire to continue promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation, stating that the U.S. Trade Representative's Office will play a role in further promoting relations between the two countries in the future.
The U.S. Trade Representative provided information on the progress and expressed the hope that Vietnam would continue to participate in and support efforts to conclude negotiations on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) as soon as possible, in order to bring mutual benefits to countries and people in the region.
