Lush greenery of Bai Tu Long

Việt NamViệt Nam10/09/2024

Bai Tu Long National Park is among the few national parks in the country that have both land area (a system of islands with forests and forest land) and sea area ( sea surface, bays, and tidal flats) . Its pristine and unspoiled nature leaves a lasting and unforgettable impression on anyone who has had the chance to visit.

Bai Tu Long National Park is located in Bai Tu Long Bay, in Van Don District. What distinguishes Bai Tu Long from the neighboring Ha Long Bay is its island complex, which consists of a mix of earthen and limestone islands, with over 40 islands of varying sizes. From a distance, it appears as impenetrable fortresses, with layers upon layers of rock formations stacked upon each other. Conversely, upon closer inspection, countless pathways and routes unfold, inspiring the desire to explore the mysteries hidden within the rocks for millions of years.

The islands of Bai Tu Long National Park are divided into three main clusters: Ba Mun, Tra Ngo, and Sau. Tra Ngo Island has a rather unique geological structure, with one island body containing two geological foundations of very different origins. The northern part of the island is a "earthen mountain" occupying more than one-third of its area. The southern part is limestone, forming enclosed coves within the mountains, creating very distinctive and attractive landscapes. Ba Mun, on the other hand, is the largest earthen island in the Bai Tu Long National Park archipelago. Currently, the island still has the highest density of wildlife in the Northeast region of Vietnam...

Due to its diverse topography and geology, the National Park boasts a rich ecosystem, comprising six typical ecosystems: tropical rainforest on mountainous islands; tropical rainforest on limestone islands; mangrove forest; coral reef ecosystem; seagrass bed ecosystem; and pine and tundra ecosystem within limestone mountains. The area possesses a diverse gene pool, both in the forest and at sea, including species such as: deer, wild boar, leopard, python, king cobra, gecko, Dalbergia tonkinensis, Dalbergia cochinchinensis, Dalbergia tonkinensis, Dalbergia tonkinensis, sea cucumber, abalone, sea turtle, dolphin, etc.

According to incomplete statistics from scientists and the results of annual biodiversity surveys and monitoring, as of 2022, a total of 2,415 species of organisms have been recorded in Bai Tu Long National Park, including 1,195 species of forest plants and animals and 1,220 species of marine organisms. Of these, 106 species have been listed in the Vietnam Red Book, belonging to the endangered, rare, and precious species list.

Besides its biodiversity value, Bai Tu Long National Park also boasts stunning landscapes. The system of limestone and earthen islands interspersed here creates breathtaking scenery of pristine and fascinating nature. They come in countless shapes, sparking the imagination with islands resembling swimming swans, giant stone horses, and islands like Thien Thu, Con Quy, Thach Ma, and Ban Co Tien... Along with these are lush vegetation covering the mountain ranges year-round, and clear blue sea channels running between the green islands on either side. Then there are the golden sandy beaches with their pristine beauty, captivating the hearts of visitors, such as Quan Lan, Minh Chau, Ngoc Vung, and Bai Dai...

Con Trui beach is a nesting and nesting ground for sea turtles in Minh Chau commune.

In particular, on Minh Chau island commune, near the calm, sandy Chuong Nep beach stretching for kilometers, there is Con Trui beach, a nesting and breeding ground for the Green Sea Turtle – one of the globally protected species. Con Trui beach looks beautiful but is quite dangerous for humans due to its steep slope and tendency to erode and build up ... but it is very safe for sea turtles to breed. For a long time, they haven't returned here to breed due to human impact in the surrounding area, but the beach is still fenced off and swimming is prohibited, waiting for the turtles to return...

According to our findings, Bai Tu Long National Park has established a Forest Ranger Station in Minh Chau commune, three ranger stations in Cai Lim, Ba Mun, and Lach Che, and one mobile ranger station. These units are equipped with three speedboats and regularly conduct patrols along the coast to promptly prevent activities that harm resources and preserve the biodiversity and landscape of Bai Tu Long National Park.

In addition, the unit has collaborated with numerous international organizations, non-governmental organizations, universities, and research institutes to investigate and assess biodiversity as a basis for implementing conservation projects and scientific research. Simultaneously, it has carried out environmental education and awareness campaigns to enhance understanding of preserving and conserving the values of Bai Tu Long National Park.
