On June 4, Lieu Quan Hue Buddhist Cultural Center (15A Le Loi, Thuan Hoa District, Hue City) organized a painting exhibition by poet and painter Hoang Nhu Thuy An (77 years old, residing in Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province).

Many artists and art lovers from the ancient capital came to enjoy and congratulate the special homecoming of a son who had returned from far away.

Painter Hoang Nhu Thuy An (real name Hoang Nhu Bua) is from Phu Loc town, Phu Loc district, Hue city.

He was born at the foot of Bach Ma mountain but has lived and worked in Da Lat city since his youth, and is now over 77 years old.

He was a teacher, poet, and artist who presented Lang Bian magazine (Lam Dong Province Literature and Arts Association) in the late 1980s. After quitting his job at the newspaper, he focused on painting and lived the life of a professional artist.

In 2012, a stroke struck Hoang Nhu Thuy An, almost knocking him out. His hard-working wife and doctors helped him overcome death, but he was paralyzed on one side of his body and his right arm - a part of his body that was also the breadwinner for his life as an artist.

Returning from the dead, the artist faced much pain, especially helplessness when his right hand no longer followed his will, unable to move to hold the brush.

But with his boundless passion for art, Hoang Nhu Thuy An patiently practiced and persevered to be able to return to painting with his non-dominant left hand. Two years later, he returned to the easel, slowly drawing the first brush strokes with his left hand.

With his honesty in life and artistic courage, the artist overcame and won over serious illness and daily difficulties, to continue creating, to continue painting with his left hand. The 29 oil paintings in this exhibition are selected from the results of that self-overcoming.

Looking at the paintings at the exhibition, artist Dang Mau Tuu, former chairman of the Literature and Arts Association of Thua Thien Hue province (formerly), commented that the colors and images that Hoang Nhu Thuy An is looking for now are the innocence of trees, leaves, flowers, birds and animals with bright colors, sometimes bright, sometimes dark, sometimes deep and mysterious.

"Standing in front of his works, we feel relieved and love life more. Perhaps when going through hardships, he calmed down and realized that there is no point in being angry when the clouds are still floating and the sun is still shining," said Mr. Tuu.

The exhibition runs from now until June 14.
