This is the information shared by Mr. Truong Sy Ba at the workshop on Building a self-reliant economy organized by Thanh Nien newspaper on the morning of May 30.
Expectations of building Vietnamese brands
Mr. Ba said Tan Long has been exporting A An branded rice to Japan for many years, with an output of more than 5,000 tons last year and expected to reach 30,000 tons this year. "Exporting rice to Japan is very difficult because there are many strict criteria, but the economic efficiency is high," Mr. Ba shared.
In a recent interview with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Ta Duc Minh - Vietnamese Trade Counselor in Japan - said that in addition to quality, brand value and suitability to consumer tastes are two important conditions for Vietnamese rice to gradually be accepted by the Japanese market.
ST25 rice, which won the world's best rice award in 2019, has attracted the attention of Japanese businesses, but still faces barriers because Japanese people are used to eating short-grain Japonica rice, while ST25 is long-grain. Some rice growing regions in Vietnam have switched to Japonica to serve this segment.
The story of exporting thousands of tons of A An branded rice to Japan is not only an export achievement, but also a testament to the potential if Vietnamese businesses have a strong brand, standard products and a methodical strategy.
But to see more "A An"s appear, we cannot rely solely on the internal strength of businesses.
It is a process of synchronization between transparent policies, effective enforcement apparatus and the spirit of development cooperation, both in the supply chain and in the business environment.
Only then will the concept of "self-reliance" truly become the driving force for sustainable development of Vietnam's economy.
Waiting for policy to 'get into gear'
From specific stories like A An rice, many businesses expect that brand building and penetration into demanding markets will be promoted more strongly in the coming time, when Resolution 68 on self-reliant economic development is effectively implemented.
However, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Ky - Chairman of Vietravel - said that the important thing is not only the issuance of policies, but also the implementation capacity. "The effectiveness of policies will be partly assessed by the speed of their introduction to the market. Without a specific plan to transform resolutions into legal documents, it will be very difficult to realize them," Mr. Ky said.
The Chairman of Vietravel also said that the implementation needs to choose the right point to focus on institutionalization, instead of spreading out, the businesses themselves must also restructure and manage transparently because "if you are afraid of transparency, how can you grow?"
Along with that is supporting businesses through transparent financial policies. Mr. Ky proposed:
"The State needs to immediately issue a Law on Self-reliance, including a Fund to foster the development of legitimate businesses, with clear, quantitative and transparent criteria, to avoid the phenomenon of backyard businesses becoming front-end businesses."
Dr. Tran Du Lich also agreed that Vietnam cannot do everything by itself, but needs to change the mindset of "exporting for others". This is the only opportunity to realize the aspiration of becoming a high-income country by 2045.
To do that, according to Mr. Lich, not only do businesses need to change their management thinking, but the enforcement apparatus must also move. In which, the role of the business force in building Vietnamese brands in the international market and taking advantage of geographical advantages, resources and people with the spirit of respecting the law.
