YouTube offers a free feature for watching videos in a small window.

YouTube is unlocking a much-desired feature for free accounts, but there's an important caveat.

After years of exclusivity for paid accounts, Google has officially brought Picture-in-Picture (PiP) to free YouTube users worldwide, allowing them to easily watch videos while doing other things.

YouTube PiP is no longer exclusive to Premium users.

The Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature has long been a coveted feature for millions of YouTube users. This feature allows videos to be minimized into a flexible window on the screen, enabling users to watch content while simultaneously texting, browsing the web, or working. Previously, except in the US market, global users were required to purchase a Premium subscription to use this feature.

However, starting this week, YouTube has officially broken down the barriers. Android and iOS users worldwide who have the free version will begin receiving an update to use PiP (Picture-in-Picture) without any cost.

Despite being a large-scale free rollout, YouTube still sets its own rules to maintain the value of the Premium package. Specifically, the free PiP feature only applies to regular long-form video content (such as vlogs, news, documentaries, etc.).

Conversely, music content will be excluded. This means that if you're watching music videos, art tracks, or even children's music, the PiP window will not work when you exit the app. YouTube clearly defines that if you want to use the platform as a professional background music streaming service, you still need to upgrade to a paid subscription.

This move by Google also puts users of the Premium Lite plan (a cheaper, ad-reduced plan) on the same priority level as free users for music. In the US market, however, the old benefits remain unchanged and are not affected by this change.

Currently, the feature is being rolled out gradually in different regions. Users are advised to update the YouTube app to the latest version on the App Store or Google Play to experience true multitasking on their smartphones as soon as possible.
