According to The Gamer , Call of Duty fans have been waiting for a standalone zombie game for years, but their wish has yet to come true. However, according to one developer's LinkedIn profile, their dream seemed on the verge of becoming a reality more than a decade ago.
According to information from MP1ST, former lead designer Michael Gummelt of Raven Software listed in his experience profile that he worked on an 'unreleased Call of Duty: Zombies online game' from 2011-2012, and stated that it was 'canceled when an Activision unit holding the intellectual property rights to that game wanted to reclaim it'.
The standalone Call of Duty: Zombies game was canceled 10 years ago.
Although Gummelt didn't name the unit, it's safe to assume it was Treyarch. Zombies first appeared in Call of Duty: World at War as a secret mode, then became a full-fledged feature in future Treyarch games, starting with the first Black Ops game. Treyarch "owned" this part of the series and continues to develop it to this day.
The standalone Zombies game was also canceled in 2012, the same year Black Ops 2 was released, and also the time when Treyarch expanded to include a Zombies mode. Aside from its short existence, no further details about the game were revealed. More than 10 years later, Activision still hasn't created a standalone Zombies game, instead integrating it into other Call of Duty titles.
However, that wasn't the only detail in Gummelt's LinkedIn profile, as he also revealed that he was the lead designer for an 'unreleased sequel to a classic IP from game developer Raven,' but it was scrapped when Call of Duty Warzone launched and became a success. While there are few details, it's possible to guess what this classic IP was.
Before becoming one of the main studios producing Call of Duty, Raven was famous for the Hexen/Heretic series. These were Doom-style shooters set in a medieval fantasy world, also known as "boomer shooters" with magic. Fans had been clamoring for the series' return for decades, and even Xbox executive Phil Spencer caused an internet frenzy simply by wearing a Hexen t-shirt.
Michael Gummelt is currently the Director of Experience at ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online . He left Raven Software in 2021 after 23 years, with his last projects being Black Ops Cold War and Warzone.
