All 48 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup are required to provide FIFA with a preliminary squad list by May 11th, including a maximum of 55 players (of which at least four are goalkeepers), but countries are not obligated to make this list public. Only players named in the preliminary list will be included in the official squad, which must consist of 23 to 26 players, including three goalkeepers.
Countries are free to announce their final 26-player squads at any time before the June 2nd deadline set by FIFA. All squads are only considered official and final when FIFA confirms the full 48 players on June 2nd.
Subsequently, countries may substitute players within 24 hours before the first match of the tournament, but only in cases of illness or injury, with FIFA's approval, and only with players from the previously submitted preliminary list.
Beyond that timeframe, the only exception is for goalkeepers. If FIFA permits, a goalkeeper who is ill or injured may be replaced by another goalkeeper from the reserve list at any time during the tournament.
